Will Ring Work With Google Home?

Ring Doorbell and other Ring Devices work with Google Home, however, they have very limited capability. Some of the Ring’s functions and features work normally, but when using Google Home, you lose some very important functions like the ability to stream live video and two-way talk. You also lose push notifications from the motion sensors, and you can’t see the cameras on a smart TV. In my opinion, the features you lose are extremely important, so I recommend using an Amazon device like Alexa with your Ring along with the Ring app to control your devices, unless you simply want to check basic functions like battery levels.

Even though Ring works with Google Home, you can’t watch a live stream from the camera on your Google Nest Hub or use two-way talk. However, you can still perform other important functions like checking battery levels, and changing a few settings.

Google Home is an app that serves as the hub for Google Nest products so that they can be controlled from one place. Since Ring isn’t part of the Google smart-home suite, most of its advanced functions won’t work.

Ring video doorbell features like live video feeds, motion detector alarms, and two-way talk aren’t accessible through the Google Home hub like they are on the Ring app.

In order to watch a Live video stream, use two-way talk, or get push notifications from the Ring, you need a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or PC. Luckily, you can use all these devices along with Google Home and Google Assistant. So even though you can’t use the Ring’s live functions with your Google Hub, you can with your smart devices, and you’ll still have access to lots of great features.

Simply say Hey Google, to access them.

If you want your Ring Doorbell to ring inside the home, you should also consider installing a Ring Chime. The chime will make a noise every time someone presses the doorbell button. They’re easy to install and plug into any wall outlet.

For renters, wireless video doorbells work best with Google because they can be connected to your apartment without wires. Most apartments don’t allow drilling new holes, which prohibits using a Ring device. But wireless Ring doorbells don’t require drilling.

How To Connect Ring To Google Home

To connect a Ring with Google Home Hub, there are only a few simple steps to follow.

  1. First, open the Google Home Assistant Services page in a browser. Have both your Ring and Google Home account information on hand.
  2. Once you’ve signed into your Google account, the web page will display all the Google Home devices that can be paired with Ring. Click the “Send to Device” button, and your Google Home app will present a notification that Ring is ready to pair.
  3. Next, you’ll have to complete a series of logins with your Google Home app and Ring account information. Some pop-up windows will assist you through the process.
  4. Once you’ve completed the proper security steps, an orange button will appear on the Google Home Assistant asking for final permission to authorize the device link.

Once you press the button, you should be able to access basic Ring functions through your Google Home app.

What Functions Are Available When You Use Ring With Google Home?

A Ring can be connected with Google Home. However, you can’t use any of the Ring’s most advanced functions, like two-way talk or live video. The pairing simply allows you to access a few settings and see some device history.

Linking your Ring doorbell to Google Home lets you access features like:

  • The status of your doorbell’s battery life.
  • Check the status of motion alerts detected by their Ring doorbell.
  • The ability to monitor doorbell rings.
  • Arm and disarm the Ring alarm
  • You can control the Ring alarm and video recording feature of Ring cameras. However, you can’t actually view the live stream, it will simply record what the camera sees so you can watch it later.

Some of these basic functions are important to monitor, so if you have Ring and Google Home, you may as well link them. However, I recommend using a tablet or smartphone to use all the Ring’s best features.

Will Ring Lights & Cameras Work With Google?

Ring lights and cameras will work with Google, however, you’ll have limited controls and features. But there are some voice commands you can use to control your devices that may come in handy.

The process of linking Ring lights and cameras with Google is almost identical to the linking process for doorbells, which we’ve outlined in a previous section. Once the two devices are connected, you can use voice commands like “Hey Google, turn on the back door lights” to turn on and off the lights.

You can also use voice commands like “Hey Google, turn the thermostat to 72 degrees” when you’ve linked a compatible smart thermostat.

In addition to these limitations, you can’t broadcast video onto your Smart TV using Chromecast.

In order to watch a live video stream and use other essential features of the Ring Camera, you need a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or PC. Luckily, you can use all these devices along with Google Home.

If you’re using a Ring Doorbell, I’d recommend connecting it to a smartphone, tablet, PC, or laptop so you can use the live options. You also need smart devices to access the app and your Ring account.

Connecting a Ring Doorbell to Google Home is very easy. Simply press the “+” icon on the Google Home Screen, select “Setup A New Device” and install the Ring Doorbell.

The Best Way To Control Ring Devices With Google Home

You can install the Google Home App on an iOS device and connect it to your Ring product. But to get a more seamless experience it’s better to use Google Home on Android. This gives you quick-access controls and new updates as soon as they’re available.

In my experience with smart home devices, it’s best to use one manufacturer for everything. The controls, features and functions are easier to use, faster and more seamless between devices. Setup is also easier and there tends t be less bugs and weird interactions. You’ll also get full access to all the devices functions.

If you ever want to stop using your Google and Ring devices together, it can be done in one step by resetting your Ring account. After the reset your Ring and Google devices won’t be paired and will no longer work together unless you pair them again.

Limitation Of Using Ring Devices With Google Home

Although Amazon Ring Devices work with Google Home, they have limited functionality.

There are several big limitations that you’ll have to deal with if you use Ring with Google Home. These include:

  • You won’t be able to view the live feed from Ring Cameras and/or doorbells.
  • Notifications for motion detection will not work with Google.
  • Two-way talk on your Ring devices will not work with Google Home or Google Nest Hub.
  • You won’t be able to use the speakers and/or microphones in your Ring Devices.

The good news is that Amazon and Google are working on improving interoperability. So newer models, and maybe the old one, could eventually have full functionality between Ring Devices and Google Home.

IFTTT works on your tablet, smartphone, laptop or PC. So you’ll be able to control all your devices from anywhere in the home with full functionality.

No matter how you use Google and Ring products together, you should still download the standalone Ring app and the Google Assistant app to access their respective devices.
