How Much Does Home Depot Charge To Cut Wood For You?

Home Depot will cut wood for you absolutely free. This includes lumber like a 2×10, sheets of plywood and wood trim. I’ve even had them cut down wood columns for me and they turned out great.

Just remember that they only cut wood that you buy in the store. If you bring in wood from home or that you bought at another store they won’t cut it.

If I need plywood cut in half or a 16′ board shortened I’ll ask them to do it. But precision cuts I do myself on the job or at home.

I always measure and mark the wood myself before they cut. Bring a list of what lumber lengths you need. It’ll make the process easier.

Home Depot will cut wood you buy from in-store down to size. But they won’t cut wood you bring from home or that you bought from another store. It’s a completely free service that they offer at every Home Depot nationwide. But it’s only for in-store wood purchases.

Does Home Depot Cut Wood At An Angle?

Home Depot will cut any piece of wood you buy from them to size. But they only cut at straight right angles. They do not cut wood at an angle.

The machine they use is an upright circular saw that works on a slide. It cuts in an up and down motion and not on angles. They’ll cut a board to length for you but you’ll have to make the angle cut yourself.

Remember that Home Depot doesn’t make precision cuts. They make rough cuts. This means no exact measurements cut exactly on a line and no angles, miter or compound cuts.

Does Home Depot Cut Wood Into Curved Shapes?

How Depot will cut wood that you bought in the store for you, but they only make straight rough cuts. They don’t make precision accurate cuts, angles, miter, compound or curved cuts. That means no shapes. For that type of a cut you’ll have to use a jigsaw, band saw or hand held saw.

Are There Restrictions?

The saw Home Depot uses to cut wood is called a panel saw. It holds an 7 1/4 inch circular saw blade. The saw is mounted on rails and moves up and down to make straight cuts. It doesn’t make angular or curved cuts.

The blade can turn horizontal which allows sheets of plywood to be pushed through it which creates a rip cut. Because of this feature, Home Depot can cut a 4’x8′ sheet of plywood vertically and horizontally.

Home Depot’s panel saw can cut any size lumber including plywood sheets. But they won’t make cuts under 12″. This is for two reasons.

  1. Small cuts are dangerous. The closer you get to the blade the easier it is to cut your hand. So they only cut wood over 12″ from the blade.
  2. Small pieces can get sucked into the powerful vacuum attached to the blade.

The saw has a cutting accuracy to within plus or minus 1/32 of an inch. It’ll cut material up to 1-3/4 inch thick. This is deep enough for all standard 1 1/2 inch lumber and plywood sheets. But not big enough to cut thick lumber like a x4 or 6×6 railroad tie. Home Depot will not cut wood that’s over 1 3/4 inch thick.

The motor is commercial-grade which is strong enough to cut through dense lumber and knots.

Lumber being cut can be loaded from either the left or right side and gently rolls through the saw on a smooth roller mechanism.

As long as the lumber you want to cut will fit on the machine, is over 12 inches and is within the blades limits, Home Depot will cut it.

The panel saw Home Depot uses to cut wood is big enough to cut a 4’x8′ sheet of plywood horizontally and vertically. But they don’t do angle or curved cuts. All the cuts have to be straight right angles.

Does Home Depot Cut Wood Trim?

The Home Depot wood cutting service is mainly for lumber and plywood and not trim. If you want to cut trim they have station set up in the trim aisle with hand saws where you can cut the trim the length.

Trim is generally priced differently than plywood and lumber. Most pieces of trim is sold by the lineal foot. You cut what you want and they measure it at the register. However many feet you buy is what you’re charged for.

Lumber and plywood is priced per piece. Not per foot. This means that if you rip a sheet of plywood or lumber in half, you still get charged for the entire piece and not just what you need.

Conclusion

Whether you’re tackling a DIY project or a Pro that needs lumber rough cut for a job, Home Depot can help.

They’ll rough cut any lumber you buy at the store as long as it’s a straight cut or a rip. They don’t do angles, miter, compound or curved cuts. And they don’t make exact precision cuts. The final cut should be done at home or on the job.
