If the light starts to blink sporadically in uneven intervals, it means your internet service is coming back and the router is trying to connect.
Once the internet is back up, the router should connect and the light will turn solid green.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do if there’s a service outage or maintenance being done other than wait for internet service to be restored. However, if you have a cellular hotspot, you can connect to the internet via your smartphone instead of the router.

3. Damaged Hardware

Damage to any of the hardware, which includes the modem itself and any splitters you’re using, can result in connectivity issues. In order for the router to function properly, the signal must pass through the cables and into your router through various junction points. If any of those points along the chain are damaged, the signal could be interrupted which will cause the light on your router to blink green. Every time the internet signal drops, becomes weak or goes out, the light will blink.

The purpose of a splitter is to act as a junction point. One cable supplying internet can be split into two or more cables which can then run to a router, modem, or TV. If the splitter is damaged, any cables connected to it will have a weak or unstable signal or no signal at all.

The way to troubleshoot and test a bad splitter is to disconnect it, then connect your router to the main cable wire before the splitter. If the router lights are now solid green, you know the issue was the splitter.
If you think you have a damaged modem/router, take it to Xfinity and they’ll give you a new one. However, if you use a 3rd part router, you’ll have to take it to a technician like Geek Squad to get it checked.

Xfinity leases their routers for a monthly fee. If you suspect your router is damaged, take it back and they’ll give you a new one. However, if you use your own router, you’ll have to get it checked by your own technician. In this case, I would test the router at a friend’s house who also has Xfinity.

4. Overloaded Modem/Router

You can overload your Xfinity gateway if you connect too many devices at once. How many devices you can connect at once depends on the model router you use. For example, mine can connect to 8 simultaneously. If I connect 9 or more devices, the router will have connectivity issues.

If your router is blinking green and you use lots of devices at the same time, try disconnecting some. This is an easy problem to troubleshoot very quickly. If your router is overloaded, as soon as you disconnect devices the light will stop flashing.

A way to fix the xFi gateway blinking green because of overloading is by connecting devices across different bands. Connect a few devices to the 2.4 GHz band and a few using the 5 GHz band. You can also choose a device with MU-MIMO functionality and traffic prioritization to increase the device’s maximum connectivity.

5. Failure To Authenticate

In order for your router to function properly, it must connect with your ISP. This is done using codes shown on the back or bottom of the router and a password. If the authentication process fails, the router won’t connect and the light will flash green. To fix the problem you need to contact Xfinity.

Issues with authentication can also happen between the router and other wireless devices. These issues you can fix yourself by inputting the correct router/network password into the device you’re trying to connect. Remember, the router password is usually case-sensitive.

6. Overheating

If your Xfinity modem or gateway overheats it can cause connectivity issues which results in a flashing green indicator light. If a modem/router doesn’t get proper airflow through the device, it can overheat. To reduce internal heat, the modem will automatically reduce its speed to cool off, which is called throttling. This can cause connectivity issues and slow internet speeds.

To prevent your modem from overheating, place it in a cool place that receives adequate airflow.
Keep the modem away from hot power packs, other warm electronics, and heaters.

The best way to fix an overheating modem is to place it somewhere cool that receives adequate airflow through the device’s fans. Don’t place it near other warm electronics, a heater, or power packs that get hot.

Make sure to clean your modem regularly to keep dust from clogging up the air inlet holes.

7. Properly Configure The Router

It’s very important to properly configure your Xfinity router to avoid connectivity issues and a blinking green light. if you need help, contact Xfinity support and they’ll walk you through it. Double-check the IP information, DCHP metrics, id numbers, password, and other information you need to configure the device properly.

A very common configuration mistake you can make when setting up a router is inputting the wrong SSID, Password, SN, CM MAC, and MTA MAC numbers, which are located on the bottom of the router. If these numbers are input incorrectly, your router won’t connect.

How To Power Cycle An Xfinity Router

If your Xfinity router is blinking green, check all the simple causes first. Inspect the cables for damage and ensure they’re all properly connected, make sure the device isn’t overheating, and confirm with your ISP that there isn’t an outage or maintenance being done in the area. Also, make sure the router isn’t overloaded and that the router and your other device authenticate with the correct network password. Once you’ve done all the basics, reset your router by performing a power cycle.
