solarium contractors NJ exterior view, glass sunroom

Solariums

A solarium is a type of sunroom that’s almost entirely made out of glass. The glass can be insulated so the room can be heated and cooled with an individual room heating and cooling unit, giving you year-round use of your new space.

  • Since solariums are built with so much glass, they provide unobstructed views of the outdoors and a new living space full of natural light.
  • If you want the most natural light possible and a near-unobstructed view of the night sky, a glass roof is a much better option than skylights.
  • Because solariums allow so much natural light to enter the room, they’re often used as greenhouses for flowers or plants that need a lot of sun.

A Gambrick Solarium is built differently than most other sunroom contractors because we don’t use kits or aluminum framing. Our solariums are built on a full concrete foundation, with framed walls, steel or engineered wood support beams, and true windows and doors.

We use real windows and doors in our solariums instead of glass panels so they can operate just like a normal sunroom.

Because of how we build our solariums, the design options are nearly limitless.

Our Work

A Gambrick sunroom can be designed to match the look of your home, or it can be something unique that stands out. Each of our sunrooms is 100% custom-built and tailor-fit to the client’s style, needs, and budget.

What Is a Solarium?

A solarium is a sunroom that’s almost entirely made out of glass. This includes glass walls and a glass ceiling. They can be insulated, heated, and cooled just like a traditional sunroom, can be built as all-season rooms, and can be integrated into the footprint of your home as additional living space.

Because of the glass roof, solariums make a great greenhouse. If you want as much natural light as possible, a solarium is what you’re looking for. However, because of all that sun, they tend to get hot, so a cooling system is recommended.

Why Add a Solarium?

Solariums provide more natural light than any other sunroom design due to their glass roof. If you want the maximum amount of natural light possible and a near-unobstructed sky view, then a solarium is your best bet.

Due to all that sunlight, solariums tend to get hot during the day. But to counteract this we install cooling systems in the room to bring in fresh air when needed. It’s a good idea to install a heating and cooling unit just for the solarium because its temperature is harder to control than a traditional home.

At Gambrick, we build solariums that are a hybrid between a traditional sunroom and a full solarium. This is because we don’t use aluminum frames or kits. Our solariums are built on a full concrete foundation and use framing, steel, and engineered lumber. We install actual operable windows and doors instead of glass panels and our glass roofs do not have to cover the entire roof, so you can limit how much sun you get.

Because of how we build our solariums, they can be used as a four-season room and integrated into the home’s floor plan.

On the exterior, our solariums can match the style of the home so they flow with the home’s design instead of looking like a tacked-on metal and glass cage.

How We Build Solariums

Gambrick builds solariums differently than most other sunroom contractors because we don’t use kits or aluminum frames. Each of our solariums is built on a full concrete foundation that supports the weight of the walls and roof. This allows us to use heavier materials than the lightweight glass panels used in most cheaper solariums.

We use full-size framing including steel and engineered wood, not aluminum. This allows us to install actual operational windows and doors that match the home. For this reason, our solariums flow better with the home’s style and don’t look like a metal and glass cage stuck to the house.

Our glass roof can be full or partial, this allows us to control the amount of natural light coming into the room. If you plan on using the solarium as a greenhouse, a full glass roof would be better. But if it’s living space, a partial glass roof is the best option because you limit how much light and heat enters the room.

Another advantage of how we build our solariums is privacy. Because we frame more traditionally, we can use blinds to close the windows when necessary.

How Are Solariums Insulated?

Solariums with glass and aluminum frames are almost all glass, so the only insulation comes from the glass itself, frames offer very little. For this reason, they’re not as well insulated as the home and can’t be integrated. However, we build our solariums differently.

At Gambrick, we build solariums with a full foundation and an insulated floor. We then use steel and/or engineered wood framing, allowing us to install operational insulated windows and doors, which provide more R-value than simple glass panels.

Our glass ceilings can be full or partial. When a partial glass roof is used, we can install lots of insulation in the surrounding areas.

Because our solariums are better insulated than those built out of aluminum and glass, we can integrate them into the floor plan of the home, which counts as living space.

On the exterior, since we use operational windows and doors, the room can flow with the style of the house instead of looking tacked on as an afterthought.

Do Solarium Windows Open?

Most solariums do not use windows that open and close. Typically the walls and roof are made from glass panels with an aluminum frame. However, in a solarium built by Gambrick, the windows are fully operational.

We build our solariums a little differently than most sunroom contractors because we use a full concrete foundation, framing, and regular windows that open and close. This provides better functionality, and more insulation, and makes the solarium look more like a traditional sunroom than a glass room.
