Wood fuel pellets are a sustainable, cost effective way to heat your home or barbecue. There are over 1,000,000 homes in the U.S. using wood pellets for heat in freestanding stoves and fireplace inserts, to heat water in boilers or to cook with in grills and ovens. Wood pellets are considered a sustainable product. They’re made primarily from recycled wood pallets or the residuals left over from the sawmilling process. When logs are converted into lumber and other high-value wood products the leftovers are used to make pellets. Pellets are sold in three main bag sizes measured by weight. Twenty (20) lb, Forty (40) lb and Fifty (50) lb. The most common sizes are the twenty (20) lb and forty (40) lb bag sizes.

A standard size pallet is 48 inches long x 40 inches wide x 5.5 inches high. Generally they’re loaded with about 1 ton worth of pallets or 2000 lbs. When fully loaded a pallet is under 60 inches high.

A standard size pallet weighs between 30-48 lbs. and can carry up to 4,6000 lbs. So fully loading it with pellets won’t overload the pallet.

Pallets can hold a lot more weight than a ton but for safety reasons they’re stacked under 60 inches high.

How Big Is A Pallet Of Pellets

The average pallet of pellets you can buy at home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowes is approximately 48 inches long x 40 inches wide by about 48 inches high and weighs approximately 1 ton (2000 lbs). When you buy a pallet full or pellets your delivered about 1 ton (2000 lbs) worth of pellets plus the weight of the pallet which is around 40 lbs.

Pellets are sold in different sized bags which are measured by weight. Depending on where you buy your pellets, bag weights are usually 17 lb, 20 lb, 40 lb, and 60 lb.

You can also buy pellets direct from the manufacturer or from a distributor that weighs 1.5 tons (3000 lbs). This is heavier than the pallets you can buy from Home Depot or Lowes. A 1.5 ton pallet is the same 48 inches long x 40 inches wide but they’re generally around 72 inches high.

Keep in mind that pallets can be altered by workers or shoppers. If you buy an entire pallet, it’s usually best to special order rather than buying from the floor. If you want to buy a floor pallet, make sure and count how many bags are on it first.

Because 1 ton worth of pellets stacked on a pallet is under the 60 inch safety requirement there’s room to add more bags on top if you need them.

Generally you can add about 25% more bags on top of a pallet and still be at a safe height. This is helpful for me because my shop is limited in space. Any more than that and it’s better to start stacking a 2nd pallet.

What Does A Pallet Of Pellets Weigh?

Most bulk pellet orders are delivered on a wood pallet, called a block pallet. They weigh between 30-48 pounds per pallet. The bags come wrapped in plastic to keep then together but it doesn’t weigh much. So other than about 40 pounds for the pallet the only weight is from the bags.

A full pallet of pellets generally weighs about 2040 pounds. That’s 1 ton (2000 lbs.) worth of pellets plus the weight of the pallet (40 lbs). Larger 1.5 ton (3000 lb) pallets can also be purchased but they’re generally not sold this big in stores.

A standard pallet can hold 4,600 lbs. That’s more than double the weight of a full pallet of pellets. The reason they don’t add more bags is the height. For safety reasons pallets aren’t loaded over 60 inches high. But a full pallet is usually around 48 inches high. Especially if they’ve been sitting for a while because the pellets settle and compress. In this case a supplier will add more bags to the top of the pallet as long as the height is safe.

When you order a full pallet of pellets plus a few bags, they’ll usually stack the bags on top of the pallet and secure them with plastic wrap. In order to get a 2 pallet deliver you usually have to order at least an additional 1/4 pallet worth of pellets.

In most cases you can fit another 20% more pellet bags on a pallet. This is a safe height and well within the pallets weight limits.

If you add pellet bags to the pallet, figuring out how much it weighs is very easy. Simply multiply the weight of each bag times how many bags are on the pallet. Then add the weight of the pallet.
