How To Change WiFi On A Ring Doorbell

Ring Doorbells are a fantastic smart home device thatโ€™s essentially a doorbell, security camera, and a two-way microphone built into one. The doorbell connects to your homeโ€™s WiFi network, allowing you to see live video, record clips, receive notifications, and talk with people at your door via the Ring app. Connecting to WiFi is easy and done during the initial setup process. Once connected, you can communicate with the Doorbell via the app and a smartphone from just about anywhere. However, at some point, you may need to change WiFi settings if you switch routers, change the password, or update your router settings. Luckily, this is fast and easy to do.

To change the WiFi on your Ring Video Doorbell to your new or updated WiFi network, do the following:

  1. Make sure the router is positioned near the Ring Doorbell for a stable connection.
  2. Activate the setup mode on your Ring Doorbell. The method for enabling setup mode depends on the specific model you have.
  3. Confirm the frequency compatibility of your device. Determine which frequency your Ring Doorbell supports.

Then do the following in the Ring app:

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the top menu; (โ‰ก).
  3. Tap Devices and select the doorbell or security camera you need to reconnect to WiFi.
  4. Tap Device Health.
  5. Tap on Reconnect to WiFi or Change WiFi Network.

Ring devices rely on a stable WiFi connection to function properly. Without it, youโ€™ll lose most of the Ringโ€™s best functions, like live video, notifications, and two-way talk. If you have continuous problems with your doorbell disconnecting from WiFi or a weak signal, try moving your router closet to the device or installing a WiFi extender.

Step 1: Check the Router

To begin, check the stability of your Wi-Fi router by performing a quick speed test to ensure itโ€™s reliable enough for your Ring Doorbell. Live video, saving clips to the cloud, notifications, and two-way talk all need a strong and stable WiFi connection to function properly.

Next, check your WiFi speed at the doorbell. WiFi weakens as the signal moves further away from the router. In some cases, WiFi may be strong close to the router but weak near the doorbellโ€™s actual location.

If your WiFi signal is too weak near the doorbell, consider moving the router or using a WiFi range extender.

Once you check the WiFi signal strength, follow these steps:

  • Reset Device Settings: Access the menu and select โ€œReboot Deviceโ€ to reset your deviceโ€™s settings.

There are two methods to choose from:

  • Reset Settings: Choose a 2-stage reboot; the recommended choice is WiFi.
  • Reset All Settings: This option restores all settings to factory defaults, allowing you complete control over configuring your WiFi and adding your account. This option is best if you want to give away or sell the doorbell or if youโ€™re having major issues getting it to connect.

Step 2: Enter Setup Mode

You must enter setup mode to connect your Ring Doorbell to a different WiFi network. This may be necessary if you change routers, change passwords, or update your routerโ€™s firmware.

Depending on which model Ring Doorbell you have, the process to enter setup mode is a little different.

For Ring Video Doorbell:

  1. Remove the doorbell from the mounting bracket.
  2. Press the orange button at the back of the doorbell ONCE. Avoid holding the button down.
  3. Confirmation of entering setup mode is indicated by a white spinning light flashing at the front of the device.

For Ring Doorbell 2, 3, 3 Plus, and Elite:

  1. Remove the faceplate from the Ring doorbell.
  2. Press the black button on the deviceโ€™s front side.

Step 3: Connect your Ring Device to a New Wi-Fi Network

Hereโ€™s the step-by-step process I use to change the Wi-Fi connection once in setup mode.

  1. Launch the Ring app.
  2. Tap the three-line icon (โ‰ก) in the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Select โ€œDevices.โ€
  4. Choose your โ€œRing Doorbellโ€ from the list.
  5. Tap on โ€œDevice Health.โ€
  6. Select โ€œChange WiFi Network.โ€
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate the doorbell.
  8. Choose your desired โ€œWi-Fi Network.โ€
  9. Enter your โ€œNetwork Passwordโ€ and click โ€œContinue.โ€

How To Change the Ring Video Doorbell Password

For security reasons, Ring Doorbell has a password to prevent people from changing your settings or accessing the device. During the initial setup process, the software will ask you to select a password for the device. However, changing it must be done manually in the settings.

To change the password for your Ring Doorbell, follow these steps:

  • Launch the Ring app and tap the three-line button (โ‰ก) in the upper left corner of the screen.
  • Choose โ€œAccountโ€ and select โ€œNew Password.โ€
  • Enter your current password in the provided box.
  • Type in the new password and confirm it.
  • The password should now be changed.

Note: The password must meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum length of 8 characters.
  • Include a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters for enhanced security.

I recommend writing the password down somewhere because itโ€™s case-sensitive, which makes it easier to forget.

If you forget your password and need to reset your Ring account, click the link to find out how. Doing so returns the device to its factory settings and lets you start a new account with a brand new password.

Make Sure You Use the Right Frequency

A wireless router uses radio frequencies to transmit the internet via WiFi to devices like tablets, gaming consoles, smartphones, and your Ring Video Doorbell. They use two WiFi frequencies, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The difference between frequencies is range and speed.

  • The 2.4 GHz frequency provides a wider coverage range than 5 GHz, but itโ€™s slower.
  • 5 GHz is a faster WiFi speed but has a shorter range.

When choosing a WiFi network for your Ring Doorbell, you may see both frequencies listed as separate networks. Choose the options that are best for your particular setup.

If your router is located close to the Ring and your other devices, 5 GHz may be the better option because you may not need the extra range provided by 2.4 GHz. However, if you live in a large house with devices spread far apart, 5 GHz may not provide the range you need.

If range or WiFi speeds are an issue in your house, which could cause issues with your Ring Doorbellโ€™s performance, consider installing a WiFi range extender near the Ring to boost signal strength.

The best way to change your Ring Doorbellโ€™s WiFi network is by using the Ring app. The app lets you configure your doorbell and change its settings, including WiFi and selecting new networks. This is an important feature to learn because you may have to change WiFi networks after switching routers, updating firmware, or changing a network password.

To change the WiFi network on your Ring doorbell:

  1. Launch the Ring App and tap the three-line menu icon (โ‰ก) in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Click โ€œDEVICESโ€ and select the device you want to change the WiFi network.
  3. Navigate to โ€œDEVICE HEALTHโ€ and choose โ€œCHANGE Wi-Fi NETWORK.โ€
  4. * A notification will appear, requesting you to be near the device and have your WiFi password ready. Tap โ€œCONTINUE.โ€
  5. Follow the prompt to press the โ€œORANGE BUTTONโ€ on the back of your device. This may require removing the device from its mounting.
  6. Press and release the โ€œORANGE BUTTONโ€ to flip the device over, then click โ€œCONTINUE.โ€ The light on your device will start to glow.
  7. * A notification will ask if you want to connect to the WiFi. Click โ€œJOINโ€ and wait for the available WiFi list to appear.
  8. Select the desired WiFi network and enter your WiFi password.
  9. Click โ€œCONTINUEโ€ and wait for the process to complete.

Note: The steps Iโ€™ve outlined may vary a little depending on your specific Ring device model. For example, on some models, the button could be black instead of orange. However, the overall process of changing WiFi networks is basically the same.

Reasons to Change WiFi Network on Ring Doorbell

There are lots of reasons for changing your Ring Doorbellโ€™s WiFi network, such as moving to a new home, buying a new WiFi router, changing security settings, or connecting to an alternative network when your current one is down. For example, when my power goes down, I use a cell hotspot to connect my devices. This requires changing WiFi networks in the Ring app.

Another reason you may have to change WiFi networks is if youโ€™re in a short term rental. Whenever I rent on vacation, I almost always bring a Ring with me unless Iโ€™m in a hotel. A few of the Ring Doorbell models are great for renters and donโ€™t require drilling to install. They hook up fast and can be connected to the rentals WiFi or a mobile hotspot.

Changing the WiFi on your Ring Doorbell is done in the same way for a Ring Doorbell Pro, a Ring Chime, Ring Chime Pro, Ring Doorbell Elite, another Ring Doorbell model, or Ring Doorbell device.

Remember that changing WiFi network may also affect the Wi-Fi password and some Wi-Fi settings.

How to Prevent Changing the Ring Doorbell WiFi Network

Changing your Ring Doorbellโ€™s WiFi network is easy to do. You simply have to go into the Ring app, choose the new network name and input the new password. However, if you input the new SSID or password incorrectly, the device wonโ€™t connect.

To avoid connection problems like this, I recommend using your existing password and SSID (network name) for the new router. This way, your devices can connect to the new WiFi network without any manual adjustments.

However, if you decide to change your new routerโ€™s network name (SSID) and password, you must modify the WiFi settings in your Ring Doorbell and other devices. If the network name and password in the Ring app donโ€™t match the new router, your doorbell wonโ€™t connect to the internet.

I also donโ€™t recommend changing the security type of your WiFi network from WPA2 to WPS. This is because WPS provides less protection.

If you’re having issues with signal strength, instead of buying a new WiFi router, consider installing a Wi-Fi extender instead.

How do I Change WIFI Settings using the Ring App?

The best way to change your Ring Doorbellโ€™s WiFi settings is by using the Ring app. The app lets you configure your doorbell which includes updating all of its WiFi settings.

Hereโ€™s how to do it:

  1. Open the โ€œRing Appโ€ on your smartphone.
  2. Locate and select the โ€œDeviceโ€ you want to modify.
  3. Go to the โ€œDevice Healthโ€ section within the app.
  4. Tap on the โ€œChange WiFi Networkโ€ option.
  5. * You should now see a list of available networks.
  6. Choose the network you wish to connect your Ring device to.

Some devices have a slightly different option called โ€œReconnect to WiFiโ€ instead of โ€œChange WiFi Network.โ€ However, the process remains the same and you should select the desired network from the list provided.

By following these steps, you can update the WiFi network on your Ring doorbell using the Ring app.

Can you Change the Ring WiFi Network Remotely?

Changing the Ring WiFi network requires physical access to the Ring Doorbell and canโ€™t be done remotely through the app or other means. To change the WiFi network on your Ring Doorbell, you must first manually put the device into set-up mode by pressing the set-up button. This canโ€™t be done remotely. Once the device is in set-up mode, you can change network WiFi settings by using the Ring app.

However, you can use the app to change network settings remotely as long as someone at the device manually puts it into set-up mode by pressing the set-up button.

This safety feature prevents someone from hacking into your Ring app and changing the network settings.

Why is My Ring WiFi Not Showing in Settings?

If youโ€™re Ring WiFi isnโ€™t showing up in settings when configuring the device, itโ€™s usually caused by a minor software glitch or bug. Luckily, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Reboot your devicee: Completely shut it off and turn it back on. This can help resolve any temporary issues.
  • Change your cellular data setting: Adjust your mobile device settings to enable cellular data. Sometimes, if itโ€™s disabled, it can prevent the device from recognizing your home WiFi network during setup.
  • Mobile device settings: If you donโ€™t see your home Wi-Fi network during setup, check your mobile device settings. Itโ€™s possible that certain settings are interfering with the setup process. Temporarily modify these settings, and remember to switch them back after completing the setup.

Rebooting the device, adjusting cellular data settings, and reviewing mobile device settings have fixed most of the connectivity problems Iโ€™ve had in the past. Usually, the problems are caused by a minor software issue thatโ€™s easy to fix. However, if none of these solutions work, contact Ring support because you could have a hardware issue.

Reasons Why Ring Doorbell isnโ€™t Connecting to WiFi or is Disconnecting

There are a few reasons why your Ring Doorbell could be unable to connect to WiFi or is disconnecting. Luckily most are easy to fix. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Make sure your WiFi network name and password are correct.
  • If you upgraded your router from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz, but your Ring Doorbell isnโ€™t compatible with 5 GHz it will cause connectivity issues. To fix the problem, change back to 2.4 GHz.
  • WiFi passwords and SSID network names are generally case-sensitive. make sure you input the password and network name exactly right.
  • Check for loose wires.
  • Check for a blown fuse or other electrical issues.
  • The WiFi signal could be going in and out. To fix an unstable WiFi connection, check the router and modem to make sure theyโ€™re working properly. Then check the signal strength next to the doorbell. If your doorbell is located far away from the router the signal could be weak.
  • Check your doorbellโ€™s battery.
  • Make sure there isnโ€™t an internet outage in the area.
