White Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

The majority of top kitchen designs include en vogue color schemes with lots of white, gray and marble. White cabinets are a clean look that’s not only elegant and a true classic but also modern and still very much in style. That’s not an easy thing to pull off. If your designing a new kitchen and considering which cabinet to choose then this article is for you. It’s filled with our best white kitchen cabinet ideas and designs with lots of pictures.

White colored kitchen cabinets have been used for decades. They’re a classic color that fits perfectly into the modern style of white, gray and marble everywhere. Traditional, Transitional, Contemporary, Colonial, Modern, you name it. If there’s a home style on the market then white kitchen cabinets are an option. They’re by far the safest and most popular color cabinet you can install. And did you know that white actually includes a variety of colors ranging from bright pure white, to warm creams and cool snows. Just because you’ve decided to go with white cabinets doesn’t mean the choice will be easy.

Designing a beautiful kitchen isn’t as easy as it may seam. There’s a lot more to it than adding fancy cabinets and expensive appliances. The overall design, layout, materials, textures, colors and respect for the smallest details are what make a kitchen someplace special. Including white cabinets are just one aspect that can take your kitchen style to the next level.

Here are some of my favorite white kitchen cabinet ideas with lots of tips, info and pictures. Hopefully one or two will inspire you to create a beautiful kitchen.

White Kitchen Cabinets Look Great In Any Style

If your considering white cabinets for your next kitchen design but are worried about the style then don’t be. White cabinets work in any style home you put them in and any style cabinet. As you’ll see in the pictures below, it doesn’t matter if your home is ultra modern, traditional, colonial or a rustic farm house. And it doesn’t matter if your cabinets are shaker, flat faced, raised panel or some other design. White is such a versatile cabinet color you really can’t go wrong.

If your refinishing your old cabinets then white is a great option for this as well. There are dozens of premixed colors on the market and a near endless amount of custom colors to choose from. Make sure if your painting your cabinets white to sand them completely smooth because even small nicks and scratches will show if you don’t.

Another big reason white kitchen cabinets are so versatile is because they’re the ultimate neutral. White cabinets look great with wood, stone, brick, steel, granite, marble porcelain, you name it. In fact I’ve never seen anything that doesn’t go with white. They even look fantastic in a multi colored cabinet design which is really popular right now. Think white shaker cabinets with a forest green, deep blue, wood, gray, black or brown island.

White cabinets also work at any price point. Everything from the most expensive luxury kitchen to a budget apartment design looks fantastic with white.

What Countertop Goes Best With White Kitchen Cabinets

When you talk about white kitchen cabinets you have to consider the countertop. They’re no way around it, every kitchen needs cabinets and they need a countertop. So it’s a good idea to pick them together because their a team. Here’s a list of what’s best:

  • Marble. By far our choice for the best countertop to use with white cabinets is marble. It’s such a rich elegant look that can’t be touched by anything else. There’s really nothing like it as far as looks goes. Sure it’s delicate and hard to keep clean but it’s also timeless, will never go out of style and undeniably beautiful.
  • Quartz. This is sort of a tie as long as you buy the quartz that’s designed to look like marble. You can tell it’s not the real thing but who cares. You get pretty much the same beauty but a lot more durability.
  • Wood. My third choice is wood. I love the look of butcher block countertops with white cabinets. Keep them looking light and natural.
  • Concrete. Polished concrete countertops are a tie with wood. They’re a modern look that’s getting more popular every year.
  • Granite. This is a tough one because granite is such a great countertop material and a very popular choice but it’s a bit dated. It’s a cheaper option than quartz or marble which is why so many builders use it but all the top designers are using one of the other 4 options.

White kitchen cabinets are such a versatile color that you really can’t go wrong with any of these options. The thing marble, quartz, wood and concrete all have in common is that they’re neutral and go with just about anything else you use in the kitchen. With granite you have to be careful about which color you choose. I recommend sticking with white, black or something neutral gray. Stay away from colors. Browns are OK but kind of dated unless you have a rustic kitchen.

White Kitchen Cabinets Aren’t Trendy

In case you were wondering white kitchen cabinets are very in style. In fact white is probably the most popular color and definitely not a trend. It’s a classic color that’s been around for over 100 years and it’s not going away any time soon.

One of the reason white cabinets have such a standard in kitchen design is how versatile they are. I mean what doesn’t go with white. It’s a blank canvas that provides you with the freedom to design. No matter the style of your home or cabinetry white will work.

They even look the best in a multi colored cabinet design. have you seen the new look everyone’s using. White upper and lower cabinets with a green, blue, brown or even black island.

White cabinets also work with any hardware, countertops, wall paint, or backsplash. When you use white the success or failure of your kitchen design is really about the other elements around it.

If your building a new home or remodeling an older kitchen and want a safe cabinet color then go with white. It’s really hard to mess up. The huge majority of buyers say they prefer a light and bright kitchen. Dark wood, countertops and tile are out. White cabinets, marble and light wood are in. Keep colors and materials simple, natural and neutral.

Pro Tip: I recommend a white shaker style cabinet with marble or quartz countertops, a different color island, marble or white tile backsplash and either steel, black or gold hardware. Stainless steel appliances are still the best choice. Stick with a color scheme like this and you can’t go wrong.

White Kitchen Cabinets Are Classic

If you want a classic look in your kitchen that’s still very modern then white cabinets are the way to go. It’s not easy to do classic and modern at the same time. There aren’t many styles from decades ago that are still being used today. And most of the ones that are tend to be trendy. If you want something that will stand the test of time then white cabinets and natural materials are what you have to choose from.

Most homeowners think the perfect kitchen should be a warm and inviting space. A place for friends and family to cook and gather around a great meal. The goal is often to reinvent the kitchen of their childhood with a modern luxurious spin. A kitchen should be first and foremost a functional space for cooking, eating, and hosting some great parties. To clients like these the kitchen is the center of the home.

  • White cabinets help create a welcoming kitchen with a traditional yet modern design.
  • Use real materials like wood, stone and brick with a warm color palette.
  • Kitchen finishes should be warmer too. Consider bronzes, golds, steel and sometimes black.
  • Less shiny finishes are the most popular at the moment. Most designers are moving away from chrome.

Stay away from anything considered overly trendy.

Because white kitchen cabinets are so popular they’ve become very affordable. You can buy a cheap stock set in any Home Depot or order a custom made design for a high end luxury kitchen. No other cabinet color offers this type of diversity.

What Colors Go Best With White Cabinets

If you’re designing a kitchen I recommend choosing all your colors at the same time. Your countertops, flooring, backsplash, paints, and finishes are all just as important your your cabinet color. Luckily, when your using white cabinets the other choices become easier to make because everything goes with white. In a way you almost don’t even have to consider the white unless there’s an undertone.

Here’s a few general rules we like to use when picking colors to go with our tinted white cabinets.

  • Warm Cream. Natural wood, Brick, Warm Stone, Concrete with warm undertones, Warm Golds & Bronzes, Warm Grays.
  • Snow Whites. Steel, Blues, Greens, Cool grays, Chrome.

If your using a pure white cabinet then anything goes. Without an undertone you can go with either a cool or warm room.

Neutral things like marble or quartz can go with any color white but make sure to pay attention to the undertones here too. Some marble has a cooler gray vein and some are more warm. Pick a marble that’s appropriate for the room.

Get your hands on a good color wheel or look one up online. Try not to clash colors or temperatures. If you’ve picked out the perfect warm cream white cabinets then don’t pair them with an ice cold blue island. Pair the blue island with a snow white or pure white cabinet. Use a brown, warm green, warm gray, black or wood island with the warm cream. You see it’s more about picking colors that work well together as a whole than specific colors because they all work in some way with white.

Tips On Matching Colors With White

This is a very broad topic because technically there are no colors that don’t go with pure white. But as you add tinting and temperature to white it changes things a lot. And then there’s what looks good. Just because something goes with white cabinets doesn’t mean you’d want to use it in your kitchen. Designers have tested just about every combinations and landed on a few that work best. I recommend you stick with those.

  • Wood. Anything wood works great with white cabinets. That includes wood floors, countertops, other cabinets and ceiling beams. We like to keep things as natural as possible. The floors are an exception. There are some gray brown stains on the market that really look fantastic. Keep stains muted and neutral. The days of golden or reddish brown floors are over. And keep the sheen to a minimum. Eggshell is best or nothing at all but definitely no gloss.
  • Marble. It’s a fabulous choice for a backsplash or countertop. Pay special attention to the vein coloring.
  • Finishes. Stick with bronze, gold, black, steel or brushed metallic finishes. Nothing too shiny. Stay away from chrome.
  • Gray. White and gray is a style that’s very in style and works well with the marble. Pay attention to temperature and value.
  • Appliances. Stainless steel is still the go to choice.
  • Accents. Adding pops of color with art, countertop decor or plants is a great finishing touch.

Keep in mind these are all general guidelines. Every kitchen is different and there’s no one size fits all correct answer. The amount of natural light, colors in the rest of the home, the style of the house, as well as any fabrics, artwork, and decor your using can all play a role in determining which colors look best with your white cabinets.

Think of each color as part of an overall color scheme. They all have to work together and compliment each other. That’s why we like to pick all the colors at more or less the same time.

Which Paint Color Works Best With White Cabinets

When it comes to choosing the right paint color to go with your white cabinets there are only a few things worth discussing.

First of all every color goes with pure white so if that’s what your using then it’s more about creating an overall color scheme than complimenting the cabinets. However if you’ve got a tint to the warm or cool side then do the same with your paint.

If you’ve got a warm cream cabinet then use a warm paint. Even if your painting the walls white there are warm white paints and cooler ones. Stick within a temperature range.

I like to keep my kitchen paint neutral and muted. If I want a color on the walls then I use something very, very subtle. I’m really looking to add just a little bit of contrast. My bold colors come from either a different color island cabinet, artwork, plants, etc. I generally stay away from boldly painted walls altogether.

Here’s a few colors I really like:

  • Gray. Match the temperature of the cabinets. Gray walls look fantastic with white cabinets.
  • White. Again, match the temperature. White walls look fabulous with white cabinets and white trim. Just make sure to vary the color slightly and the finish. Eggshell walls and cabinets with a semi gloss trim is what we typically do.
  • Tints. Yellow, green, blue, orange. Just about any color looks great with white cabinets. Just make sure the color is muted and very, very subtle. We generally use tints, not bold colors.

Summary: Stick with neutral soft colored tints in the kitchen as a backdrop for your white cabinets and backsplash. Bring colors into the room with a multi colored island and cabinet combo, plants, art, etc. Stick to a single temperature range. Vary the values and add just a little contrast.

White Kitchen Cabinet Ideas & Designs

If you’re looking for the perfect shade of white for your kitchen cabinets then I’d recommend keeping it either pure white or on the warm side. Warm metallic finishes like gold, brushed nickel, steel or bronze are very in style too. Nothing too flashy or overly shiny like chrome.

Keep the walls on the light side. White or light gray works best. Use a color tint sparingly. I like a soft warm cream for my walls just slightly lighter or darker than the cabinets with a bright white trim.

Natural elements always look great with white. Wood, brick, stone, concrete, quartz or marble are all great choices. White cabinets are very in style, modern and classic all at the same time. especially when paired with marble, grays, muted and natural colors and materials. Stick with basic, timeless styles and your kitchen design will be fabulous.

Below are some of my all time favorite kitchens featuring white colored cabinets.

Traditional style kitchen featuring white cabinets, exposed wood ceiling beams and a wood island. white kitchen cabinet ideas.

White Kitchen Cabinets With A Stained Wood Island

Soft and muted colors are a great choice for any kitchen color scheme no matter the style and one of our best white kitchen cabinet ideas. This beautiful kitchen features an overall traditional look. It includes pure white cabinets and two islands with dark brown wood stain. Matching exposed wood ceiling beams. Using a different color island from the other cabinets is a great way to add interest to the kitchen. It’s a hot trend these days that just about every top designer is using.

A wood island with your white cabinets is a great idea when the rest of the room is on the warm side. Which this kitchen is. The floor tiles, backsplash and wall paint are all a tan/cream with splashes of brown.

Cool White Kitchen Cabinets With A Modern Feel

A current trend among luxury kitchen designers, and one that we absolutely love, is using lots and lots of white in the kitchen. This kitchen is basically all white other than the decor, flooring, appliances, hardware and faucets. Take a second and notice how much everything stands out in the room because of how much white there is. With a color scheme like this it becomes even more important to choose your accessories carefully.

These white kitchen cabinets have a cool undertone that contrasts with the much warmer hardwood floors. It’s a great idea to style your kitchen this way. I believe every kitchen needs a bit of warmth to it.

One of the best white kitchen cabinet ideas we use is to include contrast. A white kitchen needs depth and it’s your job as a designer to find ways of including it.

White And Gray Kitchen

Here’s a fabulous example of the white and gray kitchen design. White shaker style cabinets paired with a medium gray island, marble quartz countertops and a glass backsplash. The design is overall on the cool side but there are some warmer elements that really pop. Those exposed real timber ceiling beams are a wonderful addition and there’s matching hardwood floors.

Another great bit of detail is the darker glass tile used behind the range. It adds another layer of depth and color to the design. Even though this is basically an all white kitchen with bits of gray there’s still quite a lot of subtle variation.

The room really needs something dark to offset all this white which is where the black lighting comes in.

White And Gold

I love the combination of white cabinets with gold hardware, faucets and lighting. But it has to be the right color gold. Stick with warm shades that have a deep color. Stay away from anything yellow. That’s an 80s look that’s thankfully long gone. Rich brown golds, reddish gold or muted golds are what tend to work best. Basically everything you see in the picture shown above.

One of the best white kitchen cabinet ideas is getting the finishes right. White cabinets are such a blank canvas they allow all the other elements to really pop.

White On White

I really like using a multi colored cabinet design with white but I also like matching my white cabinets with a a white island. This kitchen is a great example why. When you design a white kitchen the right way it’s a beautiful thing to see.

To me white cabinets work best when they’re done in a classic or modern design. This one is definitely a classic. I love the thick ornate trim work over the cabinets and all the island details. The whole kitchen is super clean, crisp, classic and very current to today’s style. I’d be happy to put this design in any home we work on.

Pro Tip: When you have this much detail and trim work a great way to offset that is with a solid slab backsplash. If you put small details everywhere it becomes overwhelming. Contrast in terms of style is just as important as color and value. The sold slab is beautiful and provides a clear separation between the upper and lower cabinets as well as the range and hood. And who doesn’t love marble in the kitchen.

White And Tan

Some great colors to use along side white kitchen cabinets are tan, beige, cream, brown, and sand. Anything in that general family of colors works. This would also include many species of natural wood like these floors. The feature wall is areal stone tile with a warm tan coloring that varies a bit from light to dark. For this color scheme to work I recommend a white that’s very pure, which is what you see here. Let the coloring come from the stone and wood. It’s tempting to go with a warm white but a pure color works best. I don’t want any color from the cabinets at all. The purer the white the more the natural colors shine.

Play off the feature wall with other elements throughout the room. The counters are an easy one but look at the lighting. Those little tan specs tie the lights to the wall and granite. Now checkout the basket on the counter, and the accessories in the top cabinets. Everything ties back to the feature wall.

Black hardware is the perfect choice. You don;t want a lot of color in a kitchen like this because it just draws attention away from the stone.

White & Wood

Here’s another view of this beautiful country style kitchen. White cabinets look fantastic with wood and other warm colors. I just love all the splashes of red used throughout the room. Remember what we said about creating an overall design and color scheme for the room. This kitchen is a great example of how to do it.

The white cabinets and tan stone feature wall draw the eye through the wood and other warm colors. Everything used supports the theme and overall style beautifully.

White Contemporary Kitchen

I know I said to stay away from chrome but there are always some rare exceptions and this is one of them.

This contemporary all white home features a steely stark design. All matching white everything including the kitchen cabinets, island, trim, walls and ceilings. The floors are a very dark, almost black, shade of gray with black dining table. This is a really bold design and in this case chrome was the right choice.

White Cabinet Lighting

Now’s a great time to talk a little bit about how to properly light white kitchen cabinets. The design is light and bright which means you’ll need lots of light. If you have a home with lots of windows it’s easy by day but what about at night or mid day when the sun is low. What about on dark days or when you want the blinds closed? No matter what your outside lighting situation is you should always carefully consider your interior lighting sources.

I recommend lots of light with white cabinets. Pendants above the island are a standard and so are the recessed lights. But in addition I really like the under cabinet lighting, the lights inside the upper glass cabinets and the hood lights.

Pro Tip: Light temperature is important too. I like to use warm yellow lights in my homes unless I’m going for a very modern design where cool lights are appropriate. Warm lights are more natural looking and easier on the eyes. They’re also more relaxing. One of my best white kitchen cabinet ideas is using lots of lights and the right type of bulb for your design.

White Cabinets & Walls

White is the most popular option for both the kitchen cabinets and wall paint, but that doesn’t mean they have to match. The kitchen is the center of most homes. It’s where guests and family members tend to gather these days. Around a table or eat in island. And it’s where you’ll be doing your food prep and cooking. Creating a comfortable space to spend all that time in is important.

Too much white can be stark and overwhelming. That’s why it’s so important to vary the tones, values and colors just a little. This room uses pure white cabinets with a gray glass tile backsplash, marble countertops, bright white trim and an eggshell white wall paint. Everything is white but the colors have just enough variation to be clean and crisp but not boring. The variety is also easy on the eyes and not overly bright.

Pro Tip: If your designing a room that’s predominately white that doesn’t mean all the colors have to match exactly. Vary your whites just a little Play with lighter and darker shades as well as with grays and subtle coloring.

Beautiful country style kitchen featuring white cabinets and tan walls with marble.

White & Beige

If your looking for a nice wall paint to go with white cabinets then consider a pale beige. Don’t go too dark, just a very small amount of color to offset the brightness of the cabinets. I recommend a very bright white cabinet with a color scheme like this. The beige walls will contrast the white and provide warmth so you don’t need to get it from the cabinets. Also cream cabinets with a beige wall can appear a little muddy and flat. I like the stark contrast very bright white cabinets against a beige wall provide.

Keep the other finishes on the warm side. Hardwood floors are the perfect choice.

As with most of the kitchen designs on the page plenty of warm lighting works best.

Gray and white kitchen featuring white cabinets, marble and medium brown hardwood floors.

White Kitchen Cabinets With Wood Floors

An all white kitchen can be too bright for some which is why gray is such a nice addition. Adding gray takes the brightness down just a notch and works well with the marble. You don;t have to go super dark. These light gray glass tiles used as a backsplash are just right. They provide detail and contrast while working really well with the marble.

A design like this looks fantastic with a medium to dark wood floor and really dark island stools or chairs. That’s exactly what was done here. In terms of values the design represents the entire range from bright white to black and lots of mid tones. Because the values are spaces so nicely you can clearly make out each element and detail.

White Cabinets With Black Hardware

One of the best white kitchen cabinet ideas or maybe you could call it a tip is dealing with the hardware selection. There are really just a few options that I use and they’re gold, bronze, steel, brushed nickel and black. Which I choose has more to do with the style of the home than the exact color of the white cabinet.

As you can see from this kitchen the theme is white and black. It’s a very modern look that’s found in transitional style homes and I love it. The black cabinet hardware is complimented by a black metal sink and brushed nickel faucet.

I would really liked to have seen black frame windows as well but white’s a nice choice too.

White & Muted Wood

There’s no doubt that white kitchen cabinets look fantastic with wood but you still have to choose the shade. I would recommend natural colors with very little staining. And stay away from anything glossy. Go with a minimal sheen or none at all.

I like muted piece of wood. Redwoods are a thing of the past and I avoid cuts that are too golden. The hardwood floors and exposed ceiling beams are just right. They fit the white and gray kitchen color schemes that are so popular at the moment. And they’re a classic look that won’t go out of style. People have been using real timber in the home for generations and the look is still very current.

White Kitchen Cabinets With A Light Wood Island

Here’s a great example of how beautiful real wood in the kitchen looks along side white cabinetry. As always I recommend using pale and muted natural wood with very little shine or stain. This custom built island is just right.

I also highly recommend a pure white cabinet. You don’t need any warmth in the cabinets such as cream and cool white would clash.

White Kitchen Cabinets To The Ceiling

Another one of the great white kitchen cabinet ideas we use all the time is running them all the way to the ceiling. It’s a beautiful look and a great way to cap the upper cabinets. I was never a fan of all that space on top of the cabinets and try to avoid leaving it unless the ceilings are especially high.

Matching White Prep Kitchen Cabinets

Another one of the great white kitchen cabinet ideas we use all the time is to create a unified design throughout the home. If you have a laundry or prep kitchen it’s nice to use cabinets that match the kitchen. Especially if they’re connected like what you see above. The cabinets don’t have to be exactly the same. The kitchen, prep kitchen and laundry are all different rooms so it’s OK to style them a little different. But a unified connected design is nice.

Many clients use a lower grade cabinet in the prep kitchen in laundry and that’s fine too. Just make sure to coordinate the color and general style with the main cabinetry.

Here’s another example of how to finish the top of your white kitchen cabinets if you’ve got a really tall ceiling. One of the great things about using white kitchen cabinets is what a classic look they are. And classic means you can use very thick, ornate trim designs. If you dislike the look of space above your cabinets as much as I do then consider filling the void with custom built trim.

White Kitchen Cabinets With A Gray Island

Spice up a traditional kitchen design using white cabinets with a multi colored design. I love the look of this gray center island but wood, green, blue, black or brown would look just as good. Using two different cabinet colors is a trend that’s getting more and more popular as time goes on. It’s a very easy way to add some extra punch to your kitchen design.

White & Black Kitchen Cabinets

Here’s another example of a beautiful kitchen using a two cabinet design. It’s one of my favorite white kitchen cabinet ideas. If you want to add a little excitment and drama to your kitchen then add a second main color. And make it something bold.

White Cream Cabinets With Wood

If you want an extra warm and cozy feeling kitchen then this is the one for you. It’s a traditional design that’s luckily still very much in style. Pair warm cream cabinets with real wood and just a little bit of reddish stain. Continue the theme with warm gold faucets, hardware, lighting and gold accented chairs.

Pro Tip: With a kitchen design like this you definitely want an old school yellow light bulb. The choice of light is very important to the color scheme. The last thing this kitchen needs are cool blue LEDs.

If your designing a classic all white kitchen then don’t forget about the lighting. Backsplashes are easy to do in white and the countertops are even easier but don;t forget about the lighting. Many people do. Use a white pendant lighting to really cap off the design. The only problem you’ll have is finding something that matches the exact white used throughout the room.

Pro Tip: Use the inside of the light to add some rich colorful accents. I absolutely love the gold finish on the inside of these lights. It matches nicely with the gold cabinet hardware.

Another thing to consider when your using white cabinetry is the sink. If your going with a farmhouse style then the exposed apron will rest right up against the cabinetry creating white on white. Whenever you have two colors that are basically the same right next to one another you have no choice but to consider how they look together. Make sure to get a sample of either the sink or cabinet when you make your selection.
