Modern Front Door Ideas

If you’ve got a modern home then you’ll need a front door with a modern style to go with it. This article is filled with our best modern front door ideas and designs, along with builder tips, pros vs cons and lots of pictures.

Choosing the perfect modern front door is essential if you’ve got a modern home. Any other style door would ruin the look of the house. Ask any designer and they’ll tell you almost nothing’s more important than maximizing curb appeal. That first impression guests get when they approach the home sets the tone for the rest of their visit. And that includes you too. I mean, who wants to come home to an ugly house every day. One of the first things about a house people notice is the front door. It’s the focal point of the home’s exterior design that you simply can’t hide. If you want to make a statement and accentuate your home’s modern style then nailing the front door is a must. And that means not only in terms of style but also color. When it comes to modern front door ideas you’ll have a lot to consider.

Choosing the perfect front door color and style is not an easy decision to make. We’ll try to make the choice a little easier for you by sharing some of our all time favorite modern front door ideas, designs and colors.

Modern Front Door Colors

If your wondering what color front door is best for your modern home, it’s a hard question to answer without actually seeing the home. So many style choices effect the decision. But we can still help by discussing a bit about basic color theory along with showing lots of example pictures of our favorite modern front door ideas.

Color theory plays a big role when selecting any color in or on a home.

The best method we’ve found to pick a modern front door color is by pairing colors that have a relationship on the color wheel. This will create a good flow or feel between all your house colors rather than a conflict.

The right color combination will have a relationship with the other house colors and create one of the basic effects listed below.

Color Types

  • Complimentary colors: High contrast colors positioned opposite from one another on the color wheel. Complimentary colors are dramatic and bold. They are sometimes referred to as opposite colors. The best example of this are white and black.
  • Analogous colors: Found side by side on the color wheel. These colors are similar to one another. Like yellow and orange or blue and purple.
  • Neutral colors: Sometimes occupy a position in the center of the color wheel and are generally considered to be black, white, gray, cream and brown. Neutrals can be safely paired with basically anything. Earthy colors are generally considered to be neutral. Neutral colors are by far the safest and most popular colors used on homes both inside and out.

Using some basic color theory when selecting the perfect modern front door color is a sure fire way to achieve fantastic results.

Before you start picking specific colors, decide if you want your home to have a complimentary, analogous or neutral color scheme.

Ultra modern granite gray front door with silver hardware, glass transom, mail slot and solid side panel.

Modern Granite Gray Front Door With Brick Siding

This modern home features a modern granite gray front door with silver hardware, mail slot, glass transom and solid side panel. The door is made from horizontal wood panels and picture frame border design. A dark gray front door is a really nice choice and looks great when paired with red brick siding.

What I really like about modern doors are the long pull bar some models include. You’ll see them used on a bunch of example doors throughout the page. They eliminate the door knob which results in a more modern, refined look.

Modern Real Wood Front Door

Modern homes use a lot of real wood and other natural materials which create a nice contrast with all the metal and glass. This would be a good example of a complimentary color scheme. One of the benefits of contrasting colors is that both the front door and house colors stand out with overpowering one another.

This beautiful modern front door is made from stained hard woods with matching side panels, frame and trim. Stacked horizontal panels make up the doors construction which is capped off with dark bronze hardware.

Modern dark wood front door with glass panels and long silver handle bar.

Tall Modern Dark Wood & Glass Front Door

This beautiful modern front door is made from a dark stained wood with glass panels. I love how modern door styles use so many horizontal panels. It’s such a refined, classy look that’s really only used in modern design. The handle is a long thin stainless steel bar with matching square dead bolt.

The door is quite tall at 7 feet and thin which gives it a sleek look. The dark wood has a very nice contrast against the smooth white stucco siding. I even like the choice of a modern wall sconce that matches the door style just right. Even the small rectangular doorbell has a silver metallic finish that looks great next to the doors hardware.

When you’re choosing the right modern front door for your home make sure to think about all the little details just like these designers have.

Modern Monochromatic Gray Front Door

This ultra modern homes features a custom built front door with a pattern that perfectly matches the wall paneling. The door color is part of a monochromatic color scheme so it matches the surrounding walls. The idea is that from far away or from certain angles this modern front door design will disappear from view. It’s a cool effect but takes a lot of custom work to pull off, you can’t just go into a store and buy matching front doors and siding wall panels. A look like this has to be designed by an architect or home designer and then custom built.

The super long pole style door handles have a stainless steel finish with matching square dead bolt.

Flat smooth panel front door with long pole handle and glass side lights.

Flat smooth panel pivot style modern front door with long pole handle and glass side lights.

Modern Pivot Style Smooth Flat Faced Front Door

This modern front door has a completely smooth flat face and pivot design so there are no hinges at the frame. The color is a brown tan paint with warm highlights throughout. The coloring matches the frame and surrounding trim which gives the door a very clean look when closed. It’s a custom built modern front door with wide side glass panels, long stainless steel pole handle and matching square deadbolt.

If you want a cleaner looking modern front door then consider a pivot style. Notice how you don’t see and hinges on the right side of the door. That’s because the door pivots or swivels along a single ball hinge located at the top and bottom of the door. The hinges are completely hidden so you don’t see hinges inside when the door is closed.

Modern all glass front door with glass side lights and transom with a black metal frame.

Modern all glass front door with glass side lights and transom with a black metal frame.

Modern All Glass Front Door

Many modern front doors like this one are made out of black frames and glass. The glass front door is a part of an an entire all glass wall. This door sits between two large glass wall panels and a top transom. The door hardware is a simple stainless steel handle and lock.

The black frames are very slim which is good when you want as much glass as possible. If your going for a look like this keep in mind that the door frame will always be wider than the windows because it’s functional. The door needs enough strength to swing open and support it’s own weight and all that glass while the windows just sit there stationary. If you want operable windows then they’ll need thicker frames too.

Most modern home use clear glass doors and panels which lets in tons of natural light and amplifies the view. However the downside to all that clear glass is everyone outside has a view inside your home too so you may want to invest in a hidden shade system.

Modern Glass Door In A Glass Wall

Many modern glass front doors are set into a complete glass wall. It’s a really cool look and a great way to fill the void. Glass walls can be custom built to fit whatever opening size you have with a wide variety of custom door sizes.

This door frame has a bronze metal finish with a very subtle sheen and a stainless steel pole handle. The side walls and porch floor are  mix of gray and wood look tile. The frame color is a nice choice because it’s a little lighter than black but is still super dark and appears black from afar.

Modern white brick home with 8 foot tall glass french style front doors with brown metal frames.

Modern white brick home with 8 foot tall glass french style front doors with brown metal frames.

Modern 8 Foot Front Glass Door

This modern front door is a french style with glass and a brown metal frame. The doors are super tall at 8 feet. If your used to standard height entry doors then you really need to check out 7 and 8 foot front doors in person to see how impressive they are. The extra height really makes an impact on guests when you bring them in through the front door.

Brown metal frames are a nice choice if you’ve got a creamy white masonry finish. This home features white brick and smooth stucco. The brown mixes in perfectly and adds to the warm color scheme. Cream house colors are coming back in a big way and replacing the white and black homes we’ve been seeing so much of for the past 5-10 years.

French Style Modern Metal & Glass Front Door

Here’s another beautiful modern front door idea. If you want an all glass front door with black metal frames but don’t have an entire glass wall then it’s fine. This is the look for you. Glass framed windows and doors set in a cream colored stucco with Ipe wood walkway. Throw in lots of greenery to add even more warmth and color.

Black smooth faced flat panel modern front door set into a glass wall.

Modern Flat Black Smooth Panel Front Door

Black is a rare color for a front door but with a modern home you can get away with it without making your home look gloomy or even dark. This modern home has all glass walls with black frames. The smooth single panel door is set into the glass wall and completely surrounded by glass. It’s such a cool looking modern front door idea in person that you really have to see one for yourself to really appreciate it.

If you’ve got a glass wall and are considering including a glass door then think about going solid and black instead.

Cool modern pivot style  front door with horizontal panels and a center black pole handle inside a glass wall.

Modern Black Pivot Front Door

Pivot style is one of my favorite modern front door ideas. It’s such a cool design when you see them work in person and give the home a cleaner look from inside because you don’t see any hinges. This door features a center pole handle which you can’t really do with traditional hinged doors.

Modern Metallic All Glass Front Door

Not all modern homes using an all glass front door have a black frame or clear glass. This modern front door design features a silver metallic finish and frosted glass. As you can see the door and glass match the garage door perfectly. If you want the glass look and a bit more privacy then consider frosting the glass.

A metallic front door is a nice choice if your going for a lighter color scheme.

Modern French Style Gray Front Door Design

This modern french style gray front door features a picture frame design with wide horizontal panels. The handles are long stainless steel poles with a square dead bolt lock. Gray is a beautiful color when paired with red brick siding which is why it’s such a popular choice.

Oversized real hard wood modern style pivot front door with stainless steel pull bar and glass side lights.

Oversized real hard wood modern style pivot front door with stainless steel pull bar and glass side lights.

Oversized Modern Real Wood Front Door Design

This oversized modern real wood front door is 7 feet tall by 4 foot wide which is quite large compared to your typical entry door design. But it’s pivot style, which means you lose around 6 inches of usable space by the hinge. But even with that lost 6 inches the door is still pretty wide coming in at around a 42 inch opening.

The real wood horizontal panels are very modern. As you may have noticed a lot of modern style front doors use horizontal paneling of varying widths. This design has no border frame which gives it a cleaner finish. Notice how the designers carried the horizontal paneling to the final foot above the door. Some designers install a glass transom above with black frame but with this look the door design is floor to ceiling.

The door has matching wood frame and trim but the surrounding glass panels are framed with black. A two tone look is nice because it accentuates the front door while the sidelights blend in with the other black framed windows and doors.

This modern front door is custom made and includes a long stainless steel handle with dead bolt lock.

Modern Wood Front Door With Sidelights

Here another example of a modern wood front door with glass sidelights only this one has matching wood frame and trim. It’s very similar to the example shown above only the sidelight trim in this version matches the door rather than being trimmed in black. Both doors feature a long stainless steel pole handle and white smooth stucco siding.

Although the two doors aren’t exactly the same there are a number of similarities. Which look do you prefer?

Modern taupe front door with horizontal metallic strips.

Modern smooth flat panel taupe front door with horizontal metallic strips.

Modern Flat Panel Taupe Front Door Design

This modern front door has a flat panel design with thin horizontal stainless steel strips and matching hinges, pole handle and door locks. As you may have noticed already, most modern front door ideas include horizontal features of some kind. It’s a very common design.

This homes color scheme is pretty common among modern homes. A cool taupe brown front door with concrete walls and metallic finishes is contrasted by the warm wood Ipe siding and other wooden accent like the door side seating.

Contemporary natural wood flat panel front door with a smooth face and long pole stainless steel handle.

Modern natural wood flat panel front door with a smooth face and long pole stainless steel handle.

Modern Natural Wood Flat Panel Front Door

This modern front door has a smooth flat panel face made from natural light colored wood. The coloring creates a beautiful contrast next to the black frame windows and chocolaty brown Ipe wood siding. A single glass side light and huge transom surround the door.

As with most of the other modern door designs this one features a single long pole stainless steel handle and deadbolt lock.

Huge french style modern black front door with horizontal glass panels.

Huge french style modern black front door with horizontal glass panels.

Huge French Style Modern Black Front Door

This is one huge front door. It’s french style so you can open it up a full 8 feet wide x 8 feet tall. Even just a single side would be considered large by traditional front door standards but this opening is really huge.

The style of the door is very modern. Black with horizontal glass panels with stainless steel hardware. Against the concrete siding, patio and retaining walls, this solid black modern door really stands out. Even as a single front door this would be a fantastic choice but as a double it’s even more impressive.

The back wall of the house is all glass doors so when everything opened up you get a true indoor outdoor feel.

Modern wood front door with vertical glass panel and stainless steel pole handle. Rich reddish brown finish.

Modern wood front door with slim vertical glass panel and stainless steel pole handle. Rich reddish brown finish.

Modern Wood Front Door With Slim Vertical Glass Panel

This ultra modern home has solid slab gray siding panels with white veining and a matching gray slab floor. All that gray really needs a bit of warmth which is supplied by this beautiful rich front door. Real wood with a smooth face and single slim glass panel with stainless steel pole handle. The door has a single side glass panel and transom with black frames.

Notice how the grain is still horizontal even though the glass is vertical. It”s a cool effect. One of the most prevalent modern front door ideas have to do with horizontal designs of some kind but you can still trow in vertical elements to break it up a bit.

Modern gray blue front door with horizontal paneling and a stainless steel glass storm door.

Modern gray blue front door with horizontal paneling and a stainless steel glass storm door.

Modern Stainless Steel & Glass Storm Door

This modern home is beautifully finished with smooth gray stucco walls and built in bedding areas. The landscaping is impeccable and quite colorful with a fantastic mix of small, medium and large plants. The modern front door is made from horizontal panels with a dark blue gray paint.

What’s really impressive to me about this whole exterior home design is the ultra modern and super cool glass and stainless steel storm door. Not many modern homes include a storm door mainly because they’re so hard to find in a modern enough style to work with the house. This ones perfect and even has a finish that works nicely with the window frames and metal stair railings.

Modern purple front door with frosted glass.

Modern Purple Front Door

You may not realize this from the example pics shown throughout the page but one of my favorite modern front door ideas is adding in some color. The vast majority of modern entry doors are black, gray, glass or wood so seeing some color is refreshing.

Modern Chocolate Brown Front Door With Vertical Paneling

Finally a modern front door idea that doesn’t include either a solid smooth face or horizontal paneling. This one has vertical panels with no border trim which gives it a nice, elongated feel. The stain is a beautiful dark chocolate brown with black frame and huge side light glass wall panels with matching black frames.

Door hardware here is a simple bronze handle and lock which so closely resembles the stain color that you can hardly see it.

Notice how the designers used different shades of real wood. The door is a very rich, dark brown however the soffits are a much lighter shade. Modern homes tend to use a lot of real wood and other natural materials and it’s OK to vary the shades and species of wood. Especially when your selecting a modern front door which is generally something all it’s own.

Modern Black front door with a single frosted glass side light and thin center vertical glass panel.

Modern Black Front Door With Frosted Glass

This modern front door design features a smooth black finish with frosted glass side light and thin center panel. That center panel is a cool look because it crosses against the horizontal paneling that’s so common among modern front door designs. The door has a stainless steel pole handle and round deadbolt lock.

Black is a really nice color for a front door on a brick house and we really only see it used on modern, contemporary or transitional styled homes.

Ipe wall with built in modern french style Ipe front door with matching wood pole style handles.

Modern Ipe Front Door

This modern Ipe front door is built into a matching Ipe wall. The door appears to blend right into the wall because the wall siding and door are made from the exact same wood. it takes a lot of skill and planning to achieve a look like this but I’d say it’s worth the effort.

The style you see here is commonly referred to as Bohemian modern or Boho. Many tropical places like Bali build modern styled homes with an island twist which is something I really love and think you should try.

Here’s a closeup pic of that beautiful Bohemian inspired modern Ipe front door. Look how seamlessly the woods coloring runs from one door to the next. This is not an easy door design to pull off but it’s beautiful.

Modern Bohemian Dark Brown Front Door

Here’s another example of a beautiful Bohemian style modern front door. It’s made from real hard wood painted a dark chocolate brown shade. The door features lot’s of very thin vertical panels that you can hardly see from far away but add a ton of dimension and texture up close. The door handle is a stainless steel pole style with matching lock.

Check out the height on this door. It’s a full 8 foot floor to ceiling door. If you’ve never seen a door this size in person then I recommend checking one out. They’re very impressive.

Bohemian Style Modern Front Door

Here’s a closeup view of this beautiful Bohemian style modern front door. You need to see it up close to appreciate how wonderful these vertical trim pieces are along with the richness of the dark brown stain. From far away the door appears to be solid dark brown but closeup you can see the subtle differences in colors that range from dark brown to purplish with streaks of a bit more red.
