How To Change Ring Doorbell Sound

A Ring video doorbell is a security camera, two-way radio, and doorbell built into one smart home device. It connects to WiFi and sends alerts to your smartphone whenever someone approaches the door or rings the bell, saves video clips to the cloud, and has infrared for nighttime use. Ring also functions as a traditional doorbell and makes a sound when someone rings the bell if you pair it with a chime. While many people are happy with the traditional ding-dong doorbell sound, there’s also a variety of additional chimes you can choose from.

Changing the sound of your video doorbell adds a fun touch, especially during holidays. For example, Ring has Halloween, Christmas, Hanukkah, and other holiday-themed chimes you can choose from.

Ring video doorbells can make a variety of sounds using Ring’s plug-in chime (sold separately).

To change your doorbell ringtone:

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the menu button.
  3. Select Devices.
  4. Choose the Chime you want to enable.
  5. Select Audio Settings.
  6. Tap Chime Tones.
  7. Choose from the list, including options like dogs barking, a harp, a train whistle, and the classic ding-dong. Seasonal tones like witch cackles, creepy laughs for Halloween, sleigh bells, and dreidel for the winter holidays are also available.

  9. Tap OK.

Keep in mind that without a chime, you can’t change the doorbell’s sound. They’re sold separately and plug into any standard outlet in the house. The chime is wireless and connects to your Ring app and video doorbell using WiFi.

To choose your Chime Tones:

  2. Tap the three lines at the top left of the Dashboard.
  3. Select Devices.
  4. Choose the Chime you want to customize.

To select a Holiday Ringtone for your Chime, open the Ring app > tap the three lines at the top left of the dashboard > select Devices > select your Chime > tap Audio Settings > select Chime Tones > select a Holiday Ringtone from the list. If you don’t find holiday ringtones on the list, you may need to update your app.

To update your Ring app, visit your app store and check to make sure you have the latest version. It might take some time to appear if you’ve already updated or just completed the update and still don’t see the holiday options.

Check back after a few hours or the next day. My Chimes list has taken 24 hours to change after an update, so be patient if it doesn’t happen right away.

Ring updates its sound library for special holidays. You can find Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and many other tones inside the library.

Can I Change the Ring Doorbell Outside Sound?

How to Change Ring Alert Sounds / Tones for a Ring Chime

A Ring Video Doorbell can be paired with a Chime that makes sounds when the doorbell detects motion or someone presses the button. This makes a video doorbell function more like a traditional doorbell. In addition, you’ll also receive notifications on your smart devices if you want to. The standard sound a Chime makes is a traditional ding-dong, but you can change the sound in the Ring app.

If you have multiple Ring Chimes in your home, you can customize each one with its own unique ringtone.

To set a Chime tone:

  1. Open the Ring app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the three-line symbol in the top-left corner to access the sidebar.
  3. Select “Devices.”
  4. Scroll down to find your Chime and tap on it.
  5. Tap on “Audio Settings” on the next page.
  6. Choose “Chime Tones” to view a selection of available sounds. You can also adjust the volume for both doorbell rings and motion alerts.
  7. Select a tone – it will play as a test through the app. Alternatively, tap the “Test Sound” bar at the bottom to listen to the chosen tone again.
  8. Tap the back arrow in the top-left corner and repeat these steps for any other Chimes you have. Alternatively, close the app.

Can you Customize Ring Chime?

You can customize the sound Ring Chime makes using the Ring app. To do it, open the Ring app > tap the three lines at the top left of the dashboard > select Devices > select your Chime > tap Audio Settings > select Chime Tones > select any Ringtone from the list.
Tones serve as alerts for both Ring and Motion Alerts.

  • With this feature, you can personalize the sound that notifies you when someone rings your Ring Video Doorbell or when motion is detected.
  • The options include different sounds and melodies like a traditional ding-dong, a tune, Holiday chimes, or unique sounds like dogs barking.

I love this feature because it lets me customize my chimes for different times of year, special occasions, and holidays.

Why Won’t My Ring Doorbell Change Sound?

If you receive an error message when updating your Ring doorbell tone in the Ring app, close the Ring app completely, wait a few seconds, and then reopen it. Usually, resetting the app works for me whenever it’s not responding.

Can a Ring Doorbell Have Multiple Sounds?

Yes, you can connect multiple Chimes to one doorbell or multiple doorbells to one Chime. The Ring Chime operates on 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, similar to the Ring Video Doorbell.

  • You can pair any number of Ring Video Doorbells with a single Ring Chime.
  • You can also pair multiple Ring Chimes with a single Ring Video Doorbell. This allows you to extend the coverage of your Ring notifications throughout your home.

It’s far more common to pair multiple Chimes to one doorbell, which is what I do in my home. Having multiple Chimes makes it easier to hear from anywhere in the house. Ring Chimes also acts as a WiFi range extender which is a nice bonus feature if you have a large home.
