Red Brick Patio Ideas

If you like spending time in the backyard then there’s nothing quite like a beautiful red brick patio. It’s a classic look that’s been around for centuries as is used on everything from small starter homes to multi million dollar estates. If you like the design then this article’s for you. It’s all about our favorite red brick patio ideas.

Red brick patio pavers are basically the same exact bricks used to build walls or side a building with. The only difference is that they’re flat faced and don’t have any holes. They’re designed to be walked on instead of stacked to form a wall. But in every other way they’re the same exact brick. They come in a variety of sizes, colors and textures so you can have a more modern look or something on the rustic side. Bricks are considered timeless and won’t be going out of style any time soon. Even though more and more people are using them these days they’re definitely not a trendy fad. Red brick patios are durable, look great and last for decades no matter the local climate or weather.

If your thinking of building a new red brick patio then I hope some the example pictures, information and builder tips you’ll find ahead will help.

Red Brick Patio Options

Because bricks are a molded man made material, they come in a variety of shapes, colors, and styles. Each brick is unique, giving every brick patio a one of a kind look. It’s a big difference when compared with other outdoor options like decks which use a lot of composite materials. Brick can be laid in a variety of patterns to create all sorts of creative designs.

Check out the beautiful red brick patio above. This isn’t a look you can achieve with any other material other than bricks.

Red Bricks Come In A Variety Of Shapes, Sizes And Colors

Many people don’t realize how many different styles, colors, sizes and textures red brick actually comes in. Because bricks are a man made product their appearance varies a lot.

  • You can buy very red bricks like what you typically see on a firehouse. They’re extremely dense and have crisp edges.
  • Red bricks also come in a more rustic design with a porous surface and less color.
  • Bricks are also made with a more natural earthy coloring with less red added to them.

You’ll find variations in color within each individual brick that varies from brick to brick, even if the bricks are from the same palette. Brick is a natural material so it’s rarely one solid color. You have to get up close to the brick in order to see all the small colors it’s made of. This variety adds a lot of interest to a patio.

Distance Changes A Red Brick’s Appearance

When up close you can pick out lots of different shades and small details. From far away, however, the brick will appear to be one solid color. The farther away you are, the more solid color the bricks will appear.

When choosing the perfect brick for your new patio consider the following.

  • The various colors in each brick. Often times brick has spots of other colors in it like grays, deeper reds or even blue tones. Consider the brick’s texture.
  • How the color changes from brick to brick. Are they all exactly the same or do the colors vary a lot. What’s the texture like. Smooth or rugged.
  • What’s the overall color of the red brick. If your stand inside the home looking at your patio as one big block of color, what color do you see?

When your designing a new brick patio it’s important to consider how the bricks will look from a variety of places. How the patio color looks from far away is important but so is how they look when up close.

The Benefits Of A Red Brick Patio

Homes with brick patios are an extremely popular choice.

Around 50 percent of homeowners ranked brick pavers as their number one choice for a patio material. Blue stone comes in at around 20 percent. Concrete at 15 percent, other stones at 10 percent, and combination makes up the remaining 5 percent. That’s a big lead for brick pavers when compared with every other type of patio material. And when broken down by color, red brick is the most popular among all the various brick paver colors by far.

This is mainly due to the sheer variety of clients who like it. We see red brick patios on everything from a starter home to a hundred million dollar estate in the Hamptons. There’s really no demographic that doesn’t like red brick. And it’s used in a wide variety of home styles such as Victorian, Colonial, Traditional, Transitional and Ultra Modern. No matter what style home you’ve got or at what price point it’s a good bet building a red brick patio is a great choice.

ROI

Red brick patios hold their value and return the most money at resale of any paver option. This is due to how beautiful red bricks are and also their durability. Unlike other type of pavers that fade or designs that are considered trendy, brick will look great for decades after it’s installed and won’t go out of style. So they’re a super safe choice.

Red brick is also extremely popular so you won’t turn off many buyers. Whenever you build or remodel a home you should consider the long term value and how easy the home will be to sell. You should also think about how much you’ll get back for the work your doing. Improving or developing real estate is a fantastic way to make money, even it’s with your home home. Appreciation over time is a great way to slowly upgrade into more expensive homes. Many people make a living by buying a cheap home, fixing it up and selling for a nice profit after a few years. But to do it you have to make smart choices and investments.

If you’re unsure about what color brick paver to go with then we’d recommend considering red. It’s a very safe choice that won’t go out of style any time soon, is durable and looks great.

Red Brick Is A Low Maintenance Patio Material

Wood decks need constant painting and staining to look great and last over time. Pavers typically fade because their color is only on the surface and not baked all the way through. They need sealants to keep their color. Composite decking fades too in addition to having to deal with all sorts of other issues. But red brick is different because they require absolutely zero maintenance.

Unlike other forms of patio or deck materials, red brick doesn’t need a thing. This is due to a few key factors.

  • A red brick’s color is baked all the way through the brick so they don’t fade. Because of this they don’t need to be sealed like pavers or cultured stone does to keep it’s color bright.
  • Bricks are a natural material that’s super strong so long term durability isn’t an issue.

But there’s more to maintenance than just keeping your patio looking pretty. Brick’s won’t rot and aren’t easily damaged from impacts or storms. You also won’t have to worry about termites, carpenter ants or other pests gnawing at your brick. Just clean the bricks from time to time and make repairs if they’re ever needed.

I’ve personally seen red brick patios, walkways and roads over 100 years old that still look as beautiful as the day they were built. Here in Trenton New Jersey, which is our capital, many of the roads and sidewalks were built during Colonial times using red brick. These are main roads that are driven on by heavy traffic every day and still look fantastic.

If bricks can take that kind of abuse for over a century then it’s safe to say your brick patio will last too. Provided you use a good quality brick and install them correctly however.

Red Brick Patios Are Eco Friendly

Red bricks are made from some of the most abundant materials on earth, clay and shale. Which makes them a completely bio degradable and a recyclable building material. No other patio material even comes close.

Bricks can be reused for other construction projects too. Retaining walls, walkways, and inside the home all use repurposed bricks. Interior brick is very popular these days on more than just a fireplace. Customers are using red brick all over the house, even as a kitchen backsplash or accent wall. Some old brick is even sliced into slivers for use as a thin veneer. Many builders will even buy old bricks because of how much clients value a vintage look. This isn’t done with any other building material I know of except for real wood beams.

Brick can even be ground up and used as a sub-base material or chipped into small pieces for landscaping mulch. The pieces absorb moisture better than any other base material which helps minimize the buildup of mold and mildew.

Because of how recyclable and re-usable they are, red brick is one of the most Eco friendly building materials in the world.

Beautiful Herringbone Red Brick Patio Ideas & Designs

Red brick patios are a timeless design that’s both beautiful and extremely durable. If you use a good quality brick and install them correctly then your patio could last for over a century. The color won’t fade because it’s baked through the brick and damage isn’t a huge concern because bricks are so dense. Best of all there are lots of patterns, colors and designs to choose from.

Below is a list of some of our favorite red brick patio ideas, designs and styles including tips from the builder and lots of pics.

Beautiful red brick herringbone patio with a soldier course border, real stone walls, limestone and cement.

Beautiful red brick herringbone patio with a soldier course border, real stone walls, limestone and cement.

Red Brick Herringbone Patio

The herringbone pattern is a fantastic way to install red brick. The standard red brick size is designed to fit together which forms this intricate pattern. It’s interesting to look at from any angle and steps up the design of a brick patio a few notches. And it’s a classic pattern that’s been used for centuries so you can use it on just about any age home. It’s also a versatile look so it works with almost any style home other than perhaps Ultra Modern.

This photo also illustrates how beautiful mixed masonry designs can be. This design features the following.

  • Red brick. The entire patio and border are made from red bricks.
  • Stone. The walls are formed with CMU and finished with cement and a natural stone.
  • Limestone. To cap the walls and create a nice bench seat slaps of limestone have been cements on top of each wall.
  • Cement. Don’t forget all the gaps between the stone because there’s a lot of them. What you see above is a standard uncolored cement.

Pro Tip: We recommend using a border design which is what you see above. The soldier course is a great way to end a herringbone design and creates some separation between the pattern and step. We like to use a simple border to contain an intricate pattern because it acts as as a sort of outline that accentuates the pattern within. Think of it like a frame around a beautiful painting.

Red Brick Herringbone Patio With Stone Walls

Here’s two more views of that beautiful red brick herringbone patio with brick border and stone walls. As you can see the soldier course border adds a lot to the design and create a nice separation between the patio and limestone steps. It’s nice to add borders because they clearly define different aspects of the design.

The stone is a nice choice because it has reddish orange earth tones running throughout it. Picking a stone with warm undertones is a good idea if you want a more harmonious color scheme.

The limestone and gray found throughout the stone veneer both work great with red brick. In general gray and red go together pretty much universally no matter their value or shade. It’s just one of those color combinations that always seems to work.

Red Brick Patio With Herringbone Pattern

Here’s another example of a beautiful red brick backyard patio with a herringbone pattern. In this design a thick borders been built out of 4 courses of brick. A border is a great way of framing the patio area. In the case of something this wide you can actually create a completely unique design for this area separate from the patio.

In this design 2 soldier courses contain 2 courses of brick run parallel. As you can see, even though the patio has a herringbone design you can still be creative with the border. It’s a part of the patio but still it’s own element so it’s nice to do something different. The contrast between your border and patio helps both elements stand out.

Red Brick Front Porch Patio

This covered front porch patio and stairs have been built out of red brick with a herringbone design. If your going for a harmonious design like this one then consider using the same brick in multiple places. One of the great things about red brick are the sheer number of applications it can be used for. Not only for decorative elements like brick veneer but also structural construction like these columns bases. Here the red brick’s been used to build the following:

  • The entire front patio and walkway including the border have all been built out of the same red brick.
  • Stair treads and risers have also been built out of matching red bricks.
  • The column bases, top and foundation are all built out of the same brick used elsewhere on the home.

One of the chimneys is built using matching brick but the other isn’t. As you can see using the same brick is a good idea because that other chimney is much too pink. A harmonious design is a good idea when your working with brick unless you going for a very specific look. In that case work the second color into the overall design so it doesn’t look tacked on.

Colonial With Covered Red Brick Patio

Here’s a second view of this fantastic covered red brick front patio and stairs. This closeup pic clearly shows how nice a harmonious design can be. The patio pattern is herringbone with border trim doubling as a step tread. The steps fronts are also red brick as is the column base caps.

It’s hard to see in this picture but the border extends to the back of the patio at the house. Carrying the border trim to the back of the patio is a nice finishing touch.

If you’ve got a white Colonial style home with black shutters and round white columns then you’ll probably want a red brick patio. The look is classic and goes together like almost nothing else. Red brick has been used on Colonials for over a hundred years. Probably since the first Colonial was built. In the old days red brick was actually used as a structural material to build the load baring walls. However today’s Colonials use red brick primarily as a decorative element or patio material.

Outdoor Kitchen With Red Brick Patio

Check out this red brick patio with a herringbone design. This closeup picture clearly shows that the patio was built using cement grout lines. There are multiple ways you can build a patio but the best by far is with cement. The patio is permanent, super strong and you won’t have to worry about woods. Cement patios have to be built over top of a cement slab which is why they’re so strong.

For some reason most patios built these days are using brick pavers with sand grout or polymeric sand over a sand base. Polymeric grout is sand mixed with glue that hardens when it gets a little wet. During installation the sand is lightly misted which supposedly makes it as hard as cement. But it’s no true and doesn’t last nearly as long. We’ve seen plenty of installations where the sand doesn’t get hard enough and ends up growing mold and mildew. We recommend going with old fashioned cement.

Pro Tip: If you using a polymeric grout because you want a different color grout then consider adding coloring to the cement. There are hundreds of colors you can add to grout to tint the color to just about anything you’d like. And any color polymeric comes in can also be matched with cement.

Covered Red Brick Patio

This covered front patio is built with red brick in a herringbone pattern that beautifully matches the home’s red brick veneer. Notice how not only the brick matches the home but also the cement grout. It’s a thick white smeared design that’s common in vintage construction where brick was used as a structural material. Some call the look German Schmear. It’s actually a trendy style at the moment. Many designers are using German Schmear inside the home on accent walls, fireplaces and even as a backsplash.

The border trim used here is a thick stone that doubles as a stair tread and riser. In this design the border does not extend to the house. Rather it wraps only around the exterior edges of the red brick patio.

Let’s of white and wood finish off the design which are both perfect for the home’s style. If you’d got an old fashioned country themed home then white trim and a red brick patio just works.

Here’s a second view of this fantastic covered red brick patio.

In this pic you can see how the herringbone design runs right into the house without the use of any border trim. This design is the most common way of building a patio although some use a border between the house and patio.

Red brick patios look great with real wood doors. Especially when the wood is stained on the warm side. You can vary the stain color a bit depending on your siding color. The value can vary too but remember to create contrast if you want the door to stand out. When your using red brick it’s going to be a focal point no matter what you do so use a wood that contrasts it. Lighter or darker works fine but in general we go a bit darker.

Herringbone Red Brick Patio

Since this is the last herringbone red brick patio example I thought we’d go into what makes the pattern.

It’s a really old brick pattern consisting of bricks laid in a repeating L-shaped arrangement so that the end of one vertical brick meets the side of a horizontal brick at a right angle. The result is an beautiful design that looks great from just about every angle. It’s more elaborate then the standard offset pattern but isn’t too over the top or distracting.

The interlocking arrangement of bricks also makes it one of the strongest patio designs. Herringbone brick patios are very durable and resistant to impacts or cracks. And they can withstand a lot of weight so you can put almost anything on top of a herringbone patio without risking damage. Assuming the patios base is built correctly that is.

Because of all these benefits and how classic the design is the herringbone pattern is one of our top red brick patio ideas each and every year.

Subway Style Red Brick Patio Ideas & Designs

Homeowners have been using red brick to build their patios for centuries. Mainly due to brick’s beauty, durability and value.

Red brick is a fantastic look that’s versatile, DIY friendly and reasonably priced. You can build a brick patio for under $10 per square foot using simple methods if you do the labor yourself. With a dry laid method, you’ll lay bricks, commonly referred to as as pavers, directly over a sand or crushed stone base. The more complicated and permanent method sets the brick over a slab foundation with mortar. Typically slabs also have a crushed stone base underneath.

In addition to how the patio will be built, you’ll also have to consider it’s location, size, and shape. And don’t forget about the design. The pattern, texture and exact color of the patio bricks and any surrounding materials are all decisions you’ll have to make during the design phase.

Ahead are some of our favorite subway style red brick patio ideas and designs. If you like subway style brick patterns then one of these designs may be for you.

Red Brick Patio With A Super Clean Finish

Red bricks come in a wide variety of designs, textures, sizes and colors. These firehouse bricks are very reed, smooth, dense and have very clean edges. Because of their density and how smooth they are, firehouse bricks make a great patio material. If you like the look.

Notice how the patio red bricks don’t match the more rustic styled bricks used on the homes siding. It’s OK to vary your patio bricks with the style used on your home somewhat. If your planning on doing something like this then we recommend using two bricks that both compliment and contrast each other.

The red bricks used in the patio are almost all a solid single color while the walls have a lot of variety. So there’s some style contrast there. The patio is more modern while the walls are a bit more rustic. More contrast. The patio bricks are lighter than the walls. Even more contrast. By using variety like this you can have two similar elements still feel unique and well defined.

Here are two more pictures of that beautiful balcony patio built with firehouse red bricks.

As you can see the patio bricks and brick siding are both using the same color mortar. By using common elements like this you can tie the overall design together.

The use of black metal patio furniture that matches the black metal railings is another smart choice. Green porch plants go great with red brick no matter where you use them. Just be selective about the pot you use. Even though the green plant looks great you also need to consider the pots color and style. Try to match the style of the home and work the pots color into the overall color scheme your using.

Also think about the texture of your pots and how they work with the brick. If your patio bricks are smooth do you want to match that or add contrast with a roughly textured pot?

White Brick Home With A Red Brick Patio

Painting a brick home white is a trend that’s been steadily gaining in popularity for the past ten or so years. In fact people are actually building new red brick homes just so they cant paint them all white. And it’s a permanent thing that can’t ever be undone. The look is beautiful though, you get the texture and dimension of brick siding with the clean beauty of white. And it’s brighter than using white brick because the grout lines are all painted white too. So what’s the best patio material for a painted white brick house? Red brick.

A red brick patio with a white brick home is such a fantastic design choice. Red and white go great together and you get all that matching texture. It’s also a nice contrast in style because painted brick is considered more of a modern trend while red brick typically leans more traditional.

Red Brick Balcony Patio

I love red brick patios with gray siding. Gray and red go beautifully together no matter where you use them. Throw in some real wood to warm things up and you’ve got one of the most in style color combinations being used on new homes today.

These bricks are fire house red, super smooth with crisp edges and laid in a subway pattern. If your going with a design like this then all that’s left for you to decide is the direction you lay the bricks. I like the way they were installed here because it help elongate a pretty short patio area. It’s all an illusion but it works.

Backyard Red Brick Subway Style Patio

You may be noticing a trend here. Red brick patios with white homes are extremely popular which is why we’ve got so many example that fall into this category. The colors just go so well together. It’s a classic look that’s been popular for over a century so I wouldn’t worry about it going out of style any time soon. And bricks are super durable so problems with the patio shouldn’t be an issue as long as you build it right. So why wouldn’t you go with brick?

The color that always seams to go with red and white is black. Black shutters, door and window trim, pots, lights, roofing or furniture. Black just looks so darn good. A house color scheme like this looks great and is easy to pull off. Black is such a popular color choice so pretty much every exterior product is offered in it. You won’t have a problem finding things like furniture, lighting or outdoor accessories to spruce up your patio once it’s built.

Simple Red Brick Patio

Sometimes the simplest patio designs are the best.

Check out this very small and simple red brick back patio shown above. The bricks have all be laid in a subway pattern with cement grout and a small soldier course border. The patio is one step high so more red brick has been used to complete the riser. Another step has been built leading into the home also entirely out of red brick.

We’ve talked about colors that work best with red brick throughout this article and two of my favorite are gray, white and wood. So it’s no surprise why this small patio is one of my favorites. The gray siding is just the right shade, I love the wood patio set and that all white arbor is just fantastic.

This simple design is one of my favorite red brick patio ideas and design in the article. With a good design it doesn’t take much size to build something really great. The trend these days always seams to be go big but that’s not always the answer. A small space can feel cozier and more relaxing.

Backyard Red Brick Patio

Here’s another white house with a red brick patio and black accent color. It’s one of my favorite red brick patio ideas because the design is so timeless. It’s been around for over a century and it’s not going away any time soon.

If your not a professional designer and don’t have the budget to hire one then I highly recommend sticking with a classic. Stay away from anything that seams trendy. I’ve seen so many passing fads and color schemes that were super popular and then all of a sudden looked totally dated. Picture almost everything from the 70s and 80s. Designers hardly use anything from those periods unless they’re designing something retro. But at the time those thick shag carpets, popcorn ceilings and wood paneled walls looked great.

Red brick patio ideas and designs are here to stay. So if your not sure what to do and have a home that fits then I recommend at least giving red brick a chance.

Poolside Brick Patio

Poolside patios look fantastic with red brick too. The blue of the pool is such a nice contrast against the red. This design uses concrete to form the patio border as well as the pool bull nose. I really like when concrete is used along side red brick as well as using it as the grout. Gray and red go really well together because the colors really compliment one another.

The choice of all wood furniture is really smart. Wood is a wonderful material for outdoor use and just looks fantastic with red brick. I love when natural materials are all used together. Too many designers these days are relying on composites like plastic or resin. Even painted surfaces aren’t as nice for me as real wood.

One of the best red brick patio ideas and designs we use is incorporating other natural elements into the design.

Red Brick Pool Patio

As you can see even large estate homes use red brick as a patio material.

This is one of the things that makes a red brick backyard patio such a great choice. When you look through the pictures we’ve included in this article take a close look at the homes. You’ll see low, mid and high end homes all using red brick. The material has such a wide ranging appeal even though it’s very cheap compared with other patio and deck materials. You can build a red brick patio by yourself for under $10 bucks a square foot. And concrete for the border is super cheap too. That’s the exact same patio design as a multi million dollar custom home. There’s no other material I know of that gives you that level of diversity.

Because of how versatile the design is, including some concrete is one of our most popular red brick patio ideas and designs.

backyard patio built with red brick and a basket weave pattern.

Backyard patio built with red brick and a basket weave pattern.

Basket Weave Red Brick Patio Design

A red brick patio with basket weave pattern is very similar to a herringbone design in that it’s not your typical subway style and looks good from every angle. It’s very simple to do because a standard brick is twice as long as it is wide including a joint. Because of this sizing you can make an entire weave design out of just 3 bricks. Simply stack 2 bricks upright with a third as sort of a cap. If your building a brick patio as a DIY project and want a pattern then give this one a try. It’s really simple to follow and hard to mess up.

As with any other design I like cement grout the best. It’s the most durable by far and requires a real foundation so your patio will be built to last.

Backyard Brick Patio With Basket Weave Design

Here’s a very simple backyard patio using a basket weave pattern with red bricks.

The great thing about a basket weave is that it makes a simple patio feel much more expensive and elaborate then it really is. The pattern is interesting and adds some dimension. Since this patio is small the basket weave doesn’t become overwhelming. On large patios it tends to be too much, I generally like a more simple pattern for large areas. But basket weave looks great when the patio areas is on the small side.

Pro Tip: A great red brick patio idea and design is to use a basket weave pattern when the patio size is smaller. It won’t get distracting and adds just the right amount of interest.

Backyard red brick patio with a basket weave design and simple border next to a raised stone patio.

Backyard red brick patio with a basket weave design and simple border next to a raised stone patio.

Small Red Brick Patio

Here’s another basket weave red brick patio that’s on the small side. It includes a soldier course border trim and red brick steps. As with the previous example, the basket weave pattern works great on small sized patios.

This is an unusual design because it’s really just one big masonry patio using two completely different materials. If your using brick next to large flat stones then a basket weave pattern works really well. The stone pattern flows more natural and random so a structured pattern like basket weave contrasts it nicely.

Pro Tip: Another way to add contrast to your patio design is with the pattern. If your using real stone next to brick then consider a brick pattern. This is one of the red brick patio ideas that we use a lot when we build patios using real stone. I also recommend including some sort of border to the brick. It helps accentuate the bricks pattern and adds some separation between the brick and stone.

Red Brick And Stone

Here are some additional views of this stone and red brick patio. There’s a lot more stone used throughout the yard but the brick is clearly the focal point. You’ll find that’s the case whenever you use red brick almost anywhere on the home. It’s a design element that’s very hard to get away from so if your using red brick be prepared for it to draw a lot of attention.

There’s a combination of stones used as a patio, retaining walls and seating which wraps around a fire pit. Stone like this is very natural with no real pattern so it’s great to contrast that with a brick pattern. Here we see basket weave used with a soldier course border. I like basket weave a lot not only as a contrast to the stone but also for small patio areas. In this case it’s a great choice.

Pro Tip: Creating some contrast with your brick pattern when next to real stone is one of the red brick patio ideas we use all the time. Contrast is important in any aspect of home design which includes the exterior patio areas.

Beautiful Red Brick Patio

This is one of my favorite red brick patio layouts. It’s great inspiration for me every time I’m asked to design a patio. Most of us always default to the generic square or rectangular shaped patio. Sure, you can add a cool border or fancy pattern but the overall patio shape is typically the same. Break yourself out of the box and consider a more elaborate layout.

Also take some time to think about how your landscaping plays into the patio design. This backyard is beautiful and it’s designed not only around the red brick patio but also these bushes, potted plants and trees. A design like this doesn’t happen by accident and it takes time for the plants to grow in so planning is important.

Red Brick Patio With Diagonal Pattern

The last pattern we’ll be looking at is diagonal. It’s a nice look that’s used a lot in both decks and patios. If you look closely you’ll see that the center walkway is a subway pattern with diagonal patterns on either side. The diagonal areas are reversed so both side meet at that center walkway. It’s nice when you break up the pattern in this way because it’s a lot more interesting and doesn’t get monotonous.

Many patios use a simple center border or strip to break up the pattern. It’s a good idea because diagonal pavers all in one direction isn’t always the best idea unless they’re part of some elaborate overall design.

Pro Tip: One of out best red brick paver ideas with diagonal patterns is to break them up with a center strip or walkway. Avoid the pattern getting monotonous or boring.

How To Keep Your Red Brick Patio Clean

While red brick patios are very low maintenance and extremely durable, regular cleanings are important if you want them looking their best.

No matter what shade, style or size brick you’ve got, if the bricks and mortar are dirty or have green mold and mildew growth then you should eventually clean them.

Brick and mortar both suffer from some of the same issues when it comes to cleaning. They’re both porous and prone to collecting dirt which leads to issues with mold growth. Especially on the areas of the patio that don’t get much sun and are damp. Below, we’ll give you some links to our favorite cleaning products.

Even though brick and mortar are both considered maintenance free they still require cleaning every now and then.

Brick And Mortar Cleaning Tips

  • Clean your red brick patio by spraying its surface with a regular garden hose fitted with a spray nozzle. A pressure washer isn’t recommended unless you turn the power way down. High water pressure can damage older brick and mortar joints. If the water pressure is uncomfortable to put your hand into then it’s set too high.
  • Remove efflorescence, chalk like stains that develop on brick exposed to high levels of moisture and humidity, with full strength white vinegar. Spray the stains, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then rinse with plain water from the hose.
  • Use a good quality brick and mortar cleaner. They do a great job of cleaning the bricks and are easy to use. Just be sure to read the directions carefully.
  • Scrubbing hard to clean areas of the brick is important and easy to do. Make sure to use a a brush with soft bristles as hard scrubbing can damage brittle brick or mortar. Scrub gently.
