Farmhouse Kitchen Sinks

What makes a farmhouse style sink is the exposed front apron. Most sinks are over mount, which means the sit on top of the counter, or under mount, which means they sit underneath. In either case the front of the sink is hidden behind the cabinets. With a farmhouse style sink you actually see the front of the sink. It’s fully exposed and sits in front of the cabinet face. Because of this design you need special cabinets which allow for a farmhouse sink.

When you’re decorating a kitchen don’t overlook a farmhouse sink. Many people think that because it’s called a farmhouse sink that’s it’s actually just for farm houses. The name has to do with the sinks origins and not the type of home it’s designed to be used in. They were originally designed and primarily used in farm houses which is why they still have the name. However farmhouse sinks come in a wide variety of styles which even includes ultra modern. The broader term we use in the building industry are sinks with an exposed front apron. Which has nothing to do with the sinks style.

Farmhouse sinks come in a wide variety of materials ranging from from classic white enamel to charming hammered copper or modern stainless steel. They’re typically large basin sinks with a single or double design which makes it easy to wash even the largest pots and pans.

Ahead we’ll go over dozens of ideas and designs for adding a farmhouse sink to your new kitchen. Apron front sinks come in such a wide variety of sizes, styles and materias which fit just about any price point so chances are there will be something you like.

Farmhouse Kitchen Sink Materials

As you probably know, kitchen sinks are made out of a variety of materials. Ranging from the most popular stainless steel or enamel models to the uncommon natural stone or copper. All kitchen sinks do basically the same thing however there are some advantages and disadvantages that come with each material. We wrote an article all about kitchen sink materials and which we thought were best HERE. If you want an really in depth article then check out that post. Ahead we’ll just be providing a short summary.

  • Stainless Steel. Extremely durable and long lasting. The most popular sink material on the market. Can scratch and dent.
  • Enamel. Smooth and durable. White enamel is the most popular farmhouse kitchen sink finish. Enamel comes in a variety of colors. Hard to scratch and doesn’t dent but can chip.
  • Fireclay. Looks just like an enamel sink. White is the most popular color although it does come in a variety of others. Can chip or crack but is scratch resistant and doesn’t dent.
  • Stone. A very heavy and durable sink material made from real stone. Can crack if hit hard on a vein.
  • Cast Iron. Very heavy and durable sink with an enamel finish.
  • Copper. A rare sink material that’s considered a high end choice. Not as durable as other options. Easily dented and scratched.

As you can see farmhouse sinks are made from a wide variety of materials. By far white enamel or fireclay are the most popular choices followed by stainless steel. Cast iron is another popular choice because it looks like white enamel but the sinks are so heavy your probably better off going with fireclay.

As you’ll see when looking over the pics, firehouse sinks come in a variety of design, shapes, sizes and materials. And look fantastic in all sorts of kitchen designs and layouts. There’s sure to be something here you’ll like.

White Cast Iron

Farmhouse style sinks come in a variety of materials but the most classic of all is cast iron. It’s a very traditional design that’s been used for over a century in country kitchens all over the world. Cast iron is a super durable material with a tough coating that resists scratches which makes it great for a kitchen sink. But it’s extremely heavy so you’ll need reinforced cabinetry to support the weight.

Another drawback of cast iron sink is that they rust. Luckily all the metal is covered with a hard outer shell so it’s not generally an issue but if that shell should ever crack the iron below will eventually rust. There are enamel repair kits on the market which are great for fixing cracks and we recommend you keep one on hand. Should the outer shell ever crack make sure the iron is dry and then repair the damage right away.

The example shown above has been paired with cream cabinets, a marble backsplash, chrome faucets and stainless steel appliances. There’s no denying how beautiful a cast iron kitchen sink can be when used the right way or how durable and long lasting they are.

Blue Island Cabinets With A White Farmhouse Sink

Colored shaker style island cabinets are a red hot trend throughout the construction industry. Blue has been the color of choice for a while but that’s slowly changing to shades of green and wood cabinetry mixed with whites and creams. Marble or other stones that look like marble such as quartz are still the countertop of choice if you can afford the high price tag.

This large single basin white enamel farmhouse sink is an under mount. From this angle you can see how the cabinets have been altered to allow for the exposed apron. If your going with a farmhouse then make sure you buy cabinetry that allows for one or you know how to alter an existing cabinet.

Green Cabinets With White Farmhouse Sink

Here’s another beautiful white enamel farmhouse sink with an undermount design. It’s a large single basin sink with a sliding wooden shelf. These deep farmhouse sinks are great if you wash large pots and pans regularly. White enamel is a good choice. It’s a beautiful sink finish and extremely durable.

Green is a wonderful shade for kitchen cabinets and looks great with a white farmhouse sink. The shade of green, gold hardware and matching faucets were also really nice choices. Cabinets like these provide a modern twist on the classic farmhouse or country kitchen look.

Granite is the countertop material of choice here which works well with an undermount sink. The edges are rounded which is the standard clean finish and it’s what we recommend for most kitchens.

Large White Enamel Farmhouse Sink

Here’s another beautiful oversized white enamel farmhouse style sink. When you buy a sink this deep you really need the right cabinetry because the frame has to be strong enough to support a sink this heavy. You also need the right clearance above the doors. You can’t just buy any cabinet you like and cut an opening for a sink this large.

As you can see a farmhouse sink with exposed front apron work in any style home. This is a more traditional kitchen but the previous two example leaned more modern and country. The sinks were all pretty much the same and all looked fantastic.

Pro Tip: Because farmhouse sinks like this are so large and deep the drain takes up a lot of space under the sink. It’s not at all like the standard kitchen sink you may be used to. Make sure you account for the plumbing being this low if you plan on using the lower cabinet for storage.

Chic Farmhouse Sink

Here’s another view of the same chic white enamel farmhouse sink in the picture above. As you can see more clearly in this picture the sink is very deep. You won’t have problems washing even the largest pots and pans in this thing. And because an enamel finish is so tough there’s little risk of scratches, dents or chips from regular use.

A farmhouse sink is an upscale choice for this beautifully designed and built kitchen. White custom cabinetry with a black island and stainless hardware give this kitchen a more modern flair.

The overall clean design of the house is a great fit for the sinks crisp finish and simple lines.

Shallow Farmhouse Sink Design

Not all farmhouse sinks have to be super deep. There are shallow basin design that are more like a traditional sink if that’s what you’d prefer. With one of these models you get the best of both worlds. A beautiful sink with an exposed front apron with a standard amount of cabinet space.

Cooks love the practicality an undermount farmhouse kitchen sink provides. Cleaning the countertops of crumbs is a breeze—just wipe them down, brushing crumbs and other debris right into the sink. A classic white enamel sink is a great addition to a traditional working kitchen.

You may be noticing a trend with all these beautiful kitchens and that’s the white subway tile backsplash. It’s a super hot trend at the moment and goes great with a white enamel farmhouse style sink.

Farmhouse Sink With Tons Of Natural Light

White enamel sinks look even better when bathed in lots of natural light as does cream colored cabinets and natural countertops. The warm light works really well with a kitchen design like this one because it accentuates the warm undertones found throughout the room. Cream is a cabinet color that’s getting more and more popular as gray is being phased out and white sinks are the go to finish of choice.

This farmhouse sink is the standard size and an undermount style. As you can see there’s still plenty of space beneath the sink for storage once the plumbings been done.

beautiful all white kitchen with black granite countertops and a white farmhouse sink

All White Kitchen

This all white kitchen features a white enamel farmhouse sink. The exposed apron has a recessed panel design which dresses it up a little when compared with most apron designs. I personally like the apron to but flat and simple but it’s nice that there are options on the market if you want something a little different.

Even though the sink, cabinets, backsplash tiles, trim and oven hood are all white, they’re all a little different. You may not realize this but there are just as many variations of white available as with any other color. The important thing if your going with an all white kitchen design is to get the undertones right. Decide if you want a warm kitchen or something cooler.

This farmhouse sink is actually a pure white that isn’t cool or warm so it works in either design.

It’s important to add some contrast with an all white design which is where the countertops come into play. These black granite slabs add just the right amount.

Country Style Kitchen

This beautiful high end country kitchen includes white cabinets with a built in refrigerator, Stainless steel Wolf range with custom built hood, stone countertops and a large white cast iron farmhouse sink. The great thing about a farmhouse sink is that it works at any price point which makes them a very safe choice. Especially if your going with white.

That cabinets are a very light shade of warm cream that look simply fantastic below these exposed real wood beams and bead board ceiling.

Charming Country Kitchen

This extremely charming country style kitchen includes one incredible lakeside view through the large black framed windows and doors. I love when a homes design includes a mix of traditional styles with modern elements. The farmhouse style sink is just the right fit. It’s a double basin design that’s fairly shallow but extra wide. What the sink lacks in depth it clearly makes up for in width.

White flat faced cabinets and a farm house sink with cast concrete countertops, white subway tile backsplash and stainless appliances creates one heck of a kitchen. Notice how the flat faced cabinets so nicely flow with the rectangular design of the sink. Matching shapes and colors is great if you want a more harmonious design.

Butcher Block Counter With A Farmhouse Sink

Just about any sink looks great with a butcher block countertop but there’s just something special about a farmhouse. Because both styles got their roots from vintage kitchen design they just seam to go together so naturally. Especially if your sink finish is classic white.

This is one beautiful luxury kitchen which includes a 60″ stainless steel Wolf range with custom hood, a built in refrigerator and freezer, and some of the most beautiful custom cabinetry you’ll see. And I just love how the solid slab marble backsplash looks next to the black granite countertops.

Perhaps of all the stunning kitchens you’ll find throughout the article, this one showcases how a farmhouse style sink can be a part of a kitchen no matter how expensive it is.

transitional style home with white shaker cabinets, marble counters, and a white modern farmhouse sink.

Transitional Kitchen With A Farmhouse Sink

Check out the modern style white enamel farmhouse sink installed in this transitional style kitchen. The home features an open floor plan, shaker style white cabinets, marble quartz countertops, marble backsplash and lots of wood. It basically ticks every chic box that there is and does everything just right. I could write an entire page just on this kitchen but the article is all about the sink.

Even though this farmhouse sink has the classic white enamel finish it’s shape is very square and angular which gives it a much more modern feel. It’s just the right choice in a transitional home that’s a combination of traditional and modern styles. I just love these home designs. The light colors, grays and marbles combined with black frames and lots of real wood is just so clean and beautiful. I’d have no problem cooking every day if this is the kitchen I was doing it in.

beautiful luxury kitchen design with a white enamel farmhouse sink under large windows.

Decorative Farmhouse Sink

Most of the farmhouse sinks you’ve seen throughout the article have an exposed apron with a very simple flat face. Some are rounded, some more angular, but the face is generally flat. I think we’ve only got one or two example of a decorative farm house sink and this is one of them. If your looking to do something a little bit out of the box then there are options. Not as many options as with a flat faced design but we’ve seen a few on the market and new ones pop up from time to time.

I would just recommend somehow working the design into the overall style of the room. A simple farmhouse sink with a flat face is easy because it goes with everything. When you start getting elaborate with the design you limit the amount of kitchens it’ll work in. I’d wait until all your cabinets and other finishes are picked out before choosing the sink to make sure it all works.

beautiful monochromatic warm luxury kitchen design shaker cabinets marble quartz countertops stainless appliances white farmhouse sink

Classy Kitchen With A Farmhouse Sink

This is one of my favorite kitchen designs on the page. It’s a classy design with a soft quality that I really like. The warm undertones are subtle enough that the kitchen feels almost monochromatic and it works because every color choice is so fantastic.

Overall the home has a transitional feel with a mix of traditional and modern elements. The exposed real wood beams are a great touch and mirror the hardwood flooring nicely. The marble quartz countertops have a warm veining that’s just the right shade to accentuate the light gray glass tile backsplash. And then there’s that white enamel farmhouse sink. The proportions of the sink in relation to the stove is just where you need it in a working kitchen.

Pro Tip: It’s easy to get lost looking at all these beautiful kitchen but these are functional spaces. Remember to position your farmhouse sink not only where it looks good but also where it’s functionally right. The sink should be in the working triangle of the kitchen which is your stove, sink and refrigerator.

Huge kitchen with two white enamel farmhouse sinks, white cabinets and 2 dark brown center islands

Large Country Kitchen With Farmhouse Island Sink

This kitchen is quite large featuring 2 dark wood islands with marble countertops. One of the best things about modern home design is how open rooms have become. The layout flows through and around the kitchen which makes it the entertainment hub of the house. That’s easily done with these large island which include lots of comfy seating.

This is a working kitchen which includes two farm house sinks. One under the large black framed windows and one in the large center island.

Classic Country Kitchen

This is such a great design because it’s a classic farmhouse style with a classic white enamel farmhouse sink. If you’ve got a country kitchen then a farmhouse sink is the natural choice. And hat other color would you go with than white.

This sink sits nicely beneath the cream colored stone countertops and provides a great contrast with the warm cream cabinets. Warm creams are making a seriously big comeback lately. Especially among high end luxury clientele. If it’s a look you like then try it out before it gets overdone and appears too trendy.

Pro Tip: One of the farmhouse kitchen sink ideas I use the most is to contrast the sink and cabinets. A farmhouse sink is meant to stand out and be seen and that’s easier to do if the color is different than the cabinets. Even if I’m using white cabinets I still choose a shade much different than the sink.

White Kitchen With Blue Center Island

This white kitchen features white shaker style cabinets, white tile backsplash, white stone countertops and a white farmhouse sink. The sink is a standard depth and width with ample amounts of space beneath. The lightly stained wide plank hardwood floors give the kitchen a rustic quality that accentuates the sinks style nicely.

The island is a deep shade f navy blue which accents other elements found throughout the room like the cabinet backing. It’s the small touches that really set a well designed and built kitchen apart from the competition.

Classic White Exposed Apron Sink

Farmhouse sinks are also commonly referred to as exposed apron or front apron sinks. It’s because they’re the only style sink where you can see the front of the sink It’s a nice design because the sink can be much larger than a standard sink that has to fit within the countertop. A farmhouse sink can be huge because it extends past the edge of the cabinet as much as you want. It also provides another design element you don’t get with a more standard sink.

That front apron comes in either a curved or angular design so you can vary the shape with your kitchen design. I really like the classic white enamel sink but they also come in all sorts of materials and colors. Stainless steel, copper and stone are all available. Enamel finish is the only one I know of that comes colored but just about everyone chooses white so there’s not a huge selection although you can have one custom made if you like.

Pro Tip: One of the best farmhouse kitchen sink ideas I have is to match the shape of the sink to your kitchen. Since a farmhouse sink is meant to be seen it needs to be considered more carefully than your typical sink.

Farmhouse Kitchen Sink With A Shelf

Don’t forget that a kitchen sink doesn’t just look good, it’s also functional and meant for washing stuff. Farmhouse sinks are big so you can handle large pots and pans with ease. Including a sliding shelf that’s easy to remove is a great way to get even more function from the sink.

This closeup picture really shows how beautiful a sink can be when the colors all work. This shade of green looks fantastic against the white sink enamel, stone countertop and gold finishes.

Pro Tip: One of the farmhouse kitchen sink ideas I use most when designing a new kitchen is to pay attention to how things look up close. So often people design from across the room but if it’s your own kitchen you won’t be looking at it in photographs. get up close and make sure thing still look good as an actual user of the sink.

ultra modern kitchen with a stainless steel farmhouse sink

Modern Stainless Steel Farmhouse Sink

Even an ultra modern kitchen looks great with a farmhouse sink. In this case the sink is made out of stainless steel and has a very square design. In a kitchen like this a stainless steel sink is the clear choice. The exposed front apron is clean and crisp which matches the other appliances nicely. Luckily the steel color also matches the color of the appliances which is a big plus. You may not realize this but not all stainless steel finishes are the same. Some are on the warm side and some are much cooler.

Pro Tip: If your using a stainless steel farmhouse sink try to match the color with your appliances or other hardware if they’re also stainless steel. This is one of the farmhouse kitchen sink ideas you shouldn’t ignore. Metallic finishes that don’t match can look out of place.
